Until I moved to San Diego last year, I hadn’t heard of this natural phenomenon called “Bio-luminescent Waves”. These waves are electric/neon blue in color and the glowing is caused by a massive red tide, or algae bloom, of bio-luminescent phytoplankton called Lingulodinium polyedrum.
This phenomenon occurs once every few years in Southern California and I was lucky to have seen it this year since apparently it was exceptionally vibrant this time. We actually filled some sea water in a glass jar, got it home and shook it with the lights off and the jar would actually glow a bright neon blue for a couple of seconds! I had taken a bunch of videos and photos which did no justice to this mesmerizing event but here’s a picture that I’ve edited that could give you an idea of it.
We got a pretty good view from Torrey Pines beach in Del Mar but the best view was in La Jolla. The waves last anywhere between a week to a month and are best viewed along the coast between Santa Barbara to San Diego, CA.
Es una experiencia maravillosa, poder ver fenómeno y en las costas del mar indescriptible. Acá en las costas oceánicas de nuestro País, Balneario La Paloma, bien al este cerca de Brasil, lo podemos de colores azul y blancas, según la época del año. Nunca saqué fotografías, que las hay, porque estas circunstancias excepcionales son para disfrutar in situ y en vivo, para que queden impregnadas en nuestros recuerdos. Me alegro que hayas disfrutado de ese tan maravilloso espectáculo.
