Biggest Starbucks Roastery in the world now in Tokyo

Starbucks opened a new Starbucks Reserve Roastery Store in Meguro, Tokyo on 28th Feb 2019. Spread over 4 floors, this is the biggest Starbucks store in the world. Before this, the biggest store was in Shanghai, China.

Designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, the 4-story roastery was inspired by the cherry blossom trees that line the nearby Meguro river. Thanks to glass walls and a terrace, customers will be able to gaze out over the Sakura trees when they’re in bloom. ''

Roastery’s four floor has something for all kinds of audiences. Tea, coffee, cocktails, alcohol, cake or sight-seeing, take your pick.

On the first floor, they have two major attractions.

One is the bakery where you can get baked goods from Milanese bakery Princi. They have the flour and essential materials outsourced from Italy and bread and pastries are baked there itself.

This cake with Pistachio & berries looks absolutely amazing. For me, I had this vegetarian pizza which I really enjoyed.

Next, I headed to the second floor where they have the Teavana tea room. The roastery houses the world’s biggest Teavana tea room with around 20 flavors of tea with specialties from Japan and China. One can try different flavors of tea and purchase the same as well.

Arriviamo Bar on third floor caters to the audience which needs a little extra after work hours. They have some special coffee cocktails. The staff is very kind and has a happy vibe about them like the rest of the Starbucks staff in the stores around the world.

The fourth floor has an indoor and outdoor sitting area. The outside seating area has a view of Cherry Blossom trees near Meguro river so you can expect it to be crowded in spring next month.

One can also view the whole roaster from top to bottom from here. The metallic Sakura (Cherry Blossom) flowers hanging from the roof come as no surprise since the theme of the roastery is Sakura . The coffee roaster machine is obviously also Starbucks’ biggest at 17m. Freshly roasted beans coming out of the roastery can be purchased along with souvenirs at the first floor.

Loved the photos and hearing about your experience, @HimanshiS ! I’m not a Starbucks fan, but this is pretty impressive. A couple of weeks ago in my international PR class one of my classmates presented on this new Starbucks and it is definitely over the top, but in a good way. Very interactive as well.

Hey @HimanshiS ,

Thank you for telling us about this great store. This is the perfect spot to have a nice cup of tea or coffee, it sounds like heaven to me. I have never been to Tokyo but I am sure this will be one of the first places I would want to visit.

I liked the various tea selection and the desserts, of course. I would love to try the pistachio and berries cake. Did you buy some tea?

By the way, I will relabel your post to Local Stories as it fits better there.

That’s insane. Our Starbucks in the US is really about quickly grabbing a cup of fancy coffee as quick as possible unless you’re there to use their free WiFi.

@iyudhi Let me know when you plan to come. I would love to take you around.

@vvbellur Thanks for appreciating. I will share pictures of Sakura trees and the view next month.

@Milomir You should. Next month, the whole city would be covered in Cherry blossom. It is the best time to visit.

@MoniDi Thanks for writing your kind words. I wasn’t sure about Food or Local Stories so I just put it here. Thanks for labeling it correctly. I would like to buy you some desserts and tea if you come here.

@Twister411 I guess it’s different in different countries. This one is really about experience. People can enjoy coffee, tea, baked goods or alcohol.

@HimanshiS , I bet this place smells great on every floor! Sounds like this Starbucks also has something for every taste - world-class Italian bakery (foodie), coffee (caffeine junkie), tea (how perfect it is the world’s largest Teavana Tea Room), and the place for “little extra after work hours.” = )

I wonder does this Starbucks Reserve serve their coffee in paper cups or ceramic cups? Is there a price difference with this place vs a regular Starbucks in Tokyo? I am sure the sitting or dining area of this place is HUGE? Is it first come, first-serve seating here? Lots of freelancers working here with laptops plugged in? How is the noise level with such high ceilings?

Here in the States Starbucks now has high chairs for customers with toddlers (kid-friendly) and tables specifically designated for their customers who use wheelchairs (accessibility-friendly)? Did you see any of these there?

Be sure to include your Local Guides review link in this post. I’m sure with next month’s cherry blossom season this place will be even busier. I bet @HiroyukiTakisawa and @YasumiKikuchi have this Starbucks on their list of must-see Tokyo coffee places now for both coffee and being high up to see the sakuras!

Thanks for sharing your experience and your lovely photos here.

Cheers,

Karen

I wanted to go to this Starbucks! And I have seen her photos on the Google Map while I was checking there. Those were so helpful for me.
This Starbucks looks amazing! It looks like a museum. I’ll definitely go there later.

Thanks for the great post @HimanshiS ! and thank you for tagging @KarenVChin

When I was invited to Connect Live 2018 and went through Seattle, there was a Japanese staff resident for some reason at the main store. When I asked the reason, I heard that “practice to set up a branch in Tokyo”, so Even if it was not a big store, I was happy just to come. But the world’s largest store in Meguro River exceeds my expectations!

I have already decided to visit. I’m glad I can enjoy the coffee of the whiskey barrel again!:coffee:

@KarenVChin Thanks for your comment. There’s a strong smell of coffee in the air and it smells a little like heaven.

Depending on whether ‘to take away’ or ‘have it there’', they serve both paper & ceramic mugs. The items are a little expensive than the normal Starbucks but it is very common for different Starbucks to have different prices depending on the available service.

It is far too crowded and new for people to plug in and sit with their laptops. It’s more like an amusement place for now. But I can imagine in some time that people will start working from this Starbucks soon.

I will add more photos and reviews once I visit again.

@YasumiKikuchi @HiroyukiTakisawa Let me know when you plan to visit. We can plan a meetup as I know other local guides who would also be interested to join.

We can enjoy all, coffee, food and alcohol. It is truly like a museum of Starbucks. So many pretty details everywhere :D.

@HiroyukiTakisawa and @YasumiKikuchias well as @JulienH and @Pedi will all be attending the Picnic in Tokyo with me, is hosted by @Anzu ! That has to be a record of Connect Live attendees meeting up outside of the event. If you are available on March 30, 2019 @ 12:00 (JST), it would be so lovely to spend some time together.

Would 31st March work for you?

or would you prefer to do it on 30th after Anzu san’s event?
