Big news: Immersive view for routes

Yesterday the big boss Sundar Pichai announced an amazing new feature coming to Google Maps soon. By the end of this year, the new feature called IMMERSIVE VIEW FOR ROUTES will be available in 15 cities.

Please view this video clip to learn more.

You can find his entire keynote speech here.

There are also important new features coming to Google Photos.

@MortenCopenhagen I was curious why the I/O announcements about Maps were not featured here. I was just thinking about creating a post when I found yours.

I have to say that while I was watching the I/O stream, I couldn’t really think of a purpose for using this. I thought that Live View, as featured by @ErmesT in this post about Venice seemed like a very helpful tool, but the immersive route didn’t seem useful.

That is until this past Thursday when my mother almost missed my daughter’s dance recital because she was hopelessly lost, driving around a housing community while the poor Maps Navigation voice tried her hardest not to just yell, “Give Up and Go Home!” We were laughing about it later, and I suggested she look at the route before she starts driving, but there’s only so much that an overhead view and still Street View images can provide. This would have given her the birds eye view of every twist and turn. Now I get it!

The other neat announcement was the ability to delete Map searches directly from the app. Which will be very helpful for clearing POIs viewed for the sake of editing rather than interest.
