Welcome to Mexico! A country with much more than tequila and mariachi. We hope we give you enough information to forget about the classic stereotypes Hollywood has wrongfully given us. Yes, there’re donkeys, sombreros, and drunk persons but it is almost impossible to stumble upon them in the heart of Paseo de la Reforma in Mexico City or walking through Avenida Vallarta in Guadalajara.
Let’s state some facts about Mexico for you to start getting familiarized with our country.
Located in North America, it borders the United States to the north and Guatemala to the south. Our official language is Spanish but there are dozens of indigenous dialects across the country, some of them are náhuatl (more than 1 million speakers), Mayan (800k plus speakers) and Mixteco (517k speakers).
Mexico is divided in 31 states and the capital CDMX (Ciudad de Mexico).
The total estimated population is 129 million (data from the 2017 census).
Our political system is the Federal Republic, which means that we have a President, a Congress and a Chamber of Senators, who don’t do much, but there they are having fun with our taxes.
Most of the Mexican families are raised with Roman Catholic values, but in recent years it is becoming less popular.
Football is Mexico’s beloved sport, our national team has never won a World Cup but if they ranked passion and loud fans we surely are in the final four.
Mexico as a country was born on 1810 when the Independence War started after almost 300 years under the Spanish Empire dominance. Some say that modern Mexico started in 1910 with the start of the Mexican Revolution.
Mexico City is the capital and it is the main cultural, political and economic city of them all. Guadalajara and Monterrey conform the country’s biggest metro areas.
Mexico’s big three tourist destinations are Riviera Maya (Yes, Cancún), Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Vallarta.
As part of the #TeamChallenge proposed by @ermest , this is #TeamMexico first and main post.
#TeamMexico members so far are:
Imperio @Imperiospice Mexico City, CDMX
Paco @pacomorett Guadalajara, Jalisco and Colima, Colima.
MEXICO CITY
Imperio contacted me via Instagram and we decided to be part of the fun, she is a local guide from Mexico City and she’ll be talking about her city’s main attractions to do in a one day visit, focusing on the southern part of the city and downtown Mexico City. The capital deserves more than one post as one of the most populated cities in the world, there’s plenty to cover from cultural hubs, food, tourist spots and hidden gems she’ll share with all of us.
COLIMA
Nature lover? I will be talking about the lesser-known state of Colima, a beautiful and small state that lies on the country’s Pacific coast bordering Jalisco in the north and Michoacán in the south. Land with one of the most active volcanoes in Mexico and an international surfers paradise. I’ll talk about its main dishes, a brief history and the geography of Colima. You can check it right here: Colima Post.
GUADALAJARA
A few weeks ago, I wrote about a fun weekend guide in my hometown of Guadalajara, Jalisco. It showcases some restaurants, bars, and nightclubs I really enjoy. You can check it out here: Hedonistic guide to Guadalajara!
This is only the beginning for us, we’ll be starting with these two posts and hopefully, we will recruit more members of #TeamMexico that want to showcase their traditions and culture. Instead of writing lots of low-quality posts, we rather produce few but meaningful. We certainly hope everyone enjoys and learns alongside us.
