Bhuban Mohan Park in Rajshahi holds the memory of the great Language Movement of Bangladesh. But this is the exception. It is not only associated with history, but has become history itself. It is one of the oldest Shaheed Minars of Bangladesh. After the language movement of 1952, several Shaheed Minars were built across the country. Bangladesh’s first Shaheed Minar was built in the Rajshahi College Student Hostel, which was later demolished by the Pakistan government. At present, a newly built Shaheed Minar has been built there.
Bhuban Mohan Park is located in the heart of Rajshahi city. It is located in Saheb Bazar, the main commercial area of the city. In 1953, Martyr’s Day was celebrated here in memory of Bhasha Shaheed with grand arrangements, which is an important event in our history. But the infrastructure of that time is no more. Its renovation work has been completed at various later times. Its most modern form was established in 1998. Language soldier Golam Arif Tipu inaugurated it. Name plaques of 64 language soldiers of Rajshahi region were added on the monument in 2005.
A small park has been built around the Shaheed Minar. It can be called a community park because of its small size. This place is very important in Rajshahi in terms of politics and culture. Various political and cultural activities are held here. The place is also preferred by the city dwellers for evening gossiping. The park is well decorated with beautiful variety of plants. A very nice place to sit has been made here. Food stalls have sprung up around the park and surrounding market. Most are junk food, but delicious to eat. Among them, Puri, Singara, Beguni, Chop etc are very famous. Besides, some fast food food carts can be seen here in evening.
Rajshahi’s largest shoe-sandal market is built along the walls of Bhuban Mohan Park. There is always a crowd of people here. Narrow roads make the place more crowded. A few years ago, many areas of the park were occupied by others, which were later cleared. This Shaheed minar and park is very important in Rajshahi. This establishment reminds us of our glorious history.
