The Gwalior Fort in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, was built in the 3rd century. This fort is one of the spectacular specimens of medieval architecture. This fort built of red sandstone is one of the largest fort in the country and has an important place in Indian history. Bhim Singh Rana was a prominent King of Gohad whose reign was from 1717 to 1756 AD. Who got the control of Gwalior Fort in 1740 AD by the surrender of Mughal Governor Ali Khan as Mughal Empire was facing severe decline. In 1756 he sustained severe injuries in the battle with Marathas under the leadership of Shinde and he died after three days. His Queen Roshni committed Johar.

This memorial was built by Rana Chhatar Singh as a tribute to Bhim Singh Rana whose reign was from 1757 to 1785 AD. This is a very unique Cenotaph and known for its architecture. It’s built on the bank of Johar Kund on a raised platform. It’s a three storeyed cenotaph flanked by a dome. Ground floor is a large square and can be accessed via flights of steps through archways. As all the four sides, five decorated stone archways and pillars are the support of roof. Stone hang outs are supported by stone brackets and the central square is raised two floors and top is flanked by the dome. Each floor is having a door in all the four sides to access the terrace. Its a notable cenotaph having unique features.

It needs half an hour and every year on the eve of Ramnavmi a special festival is organised by the Jat Community as Bhim Singh Rana and Chhatar Singh were from the Jat Community. It’s a major attraction among the history buffs wanderers soulseekers heritage art and architecture lovers. For Gwalior visit the best season remain November to February always pleasant. Entry fee is charged collectively to visit the historical sights like Karan Mahal Vikram Mahal Jahangir Mahal Johar Kund Bhim Singh Rana Ki Chhatri etc.
