Best Way to Put Murals on Maps

Actually I’m not quite sure if this is the right place to post this, or perhaps in Help Desk… I’m struggling to find a good way to put a collection of murals on Google Maps, and in turn be able to construction a public list as tourist attractions (of murals).

If I add the photo of a mural as part of a nearby existing place, say a restaurant, then the mural could get buried among 100’s of other photos of that place, assuming it’s popular; and there is no point adding the place to my list of murals.

Alternatively, I could create and submit a “missing place” so the photos can be exclusively about the mural, perfect to be added to my public list. However, there is no guarantee Google would approve my submission. If the approval rate is 5 out of 20, then there is once again little point for constructing the public list of murals.

Maybe Google Maps just isn’t the right vehicle for such project… Any ideas or suggestions is greatly appreciated.

Hi @DavidHou

Great question.

One this I can say for sure is that adding photos of murals to a random nearby pin is not a viable strategy. Such photos risk soon be flagged as not showing the place.

As I understand your project, it is important for you to be able to include all the murals you want to your list. Then Google Maps is not the best tool for you.

Google offers another tool called My Maps. Here you can add text and photos to any set of GPS coordinates, name them as you please, and set the order and even put them on a line. Only draw back is that you need to share or publish the link to your My Map yourself.

Lastly, I want to mention that we should not add places to Google Maps that does not have the precise category in the list of categories. This is how Google signals “No thanks” to such new places. There is no specific mural category. But my interpretation of the relatively new category “Cultural landmark” is that it can be used for very well-known murals or collections of murals like [Union Lane Street](http://Union%20Lane Graffiti https://maps.app.goo.gl/GWpraLru5vXq6AuT8) in Melbourne.

I hope this helps.

@MortenCopenhagen Thanks for your valuable input! I’ve used My Maps a number of time in the past for bike trails but never thought of using it to showcase photos. I think this will work for me :grinning: :+1:

@DavidHou as @MortenCopenhagen mentioned, the category “Cultural landmark” is also in my view the best fitting category for murals. It was added less than 2 years ago - I posted on that back then.

@MortenCopenhagen @JanVanHaver Here’s the My Maps version of the street mural list I just constructed.

I will look into the Cultural Landmark category as well! Thank you
