Best trekking places to visit in South India

I am a passionate traveler and love to connect with different people with different mentalities. Trekking is the one which helped me achieve that and explore places simultaneously. You actually learn a lot from it. Being into engineering profession in South India for around 7 years, I have explored most of the trekking places. Below is the list of one of my favorites:

1. Agumbe rainforest

2. Kodachadri

Kodachadri again is nestled deep in Western ghat in Shimoga district around 420km from Bangalore. It is 10th highest peak in state, famous for lush green trails, misty landscapes and picturesque waterfalls. There is temple of goddess Mookambika on top and one can witness being above cloud. Post monsoon is the best season to visit Kodachadri and fully enjoy nature. Trekking in monsoon is bit difficult.

3. Gokarna

Gokarna is a small town on western coastal line having many beaches. This is a kind of tourist place and not typical trekking place, but in fact this was my longest trek. Yes you read it right, we did trekking at Gokarna, that too total 36km in 2 days. That state of relaxing on beach after such a exhausting trek is simply awesome. All beaches are separated by small hills and we crossed such 7 hills, passing through different beaches, crawling though tree branches. Trekking on coastal line is challenging because of humid weather.

4. Coorg

Coorg is popular destination among trekkers and couples as well, situated in southwest of Karnataka. Located amidst imposing mountains with misty landscape, green hills, spice and coffee yards and water streams cutting the way. One can find many exotic resorts. Along with trekking one can do river rafting, called white water rafting. July to September is the best time to do rafting as river water is in full and quick flow.

5. Gandikota

Gandikota is a small village on the bank of Pennar river in Andhra Pradesh. It is called India’s Grand Canyon known for its spectacular gorge formed by river Pennar that cuts through the Erramala hills. Its very similar to river Colorado in Arizona and Belum caves simillar to Antelope canyons in Arizona. Best time to visit Gandikota is September to February as weather will be pleasant. After February weather will be hot and humid.

6. Nagalapuram

Nagalapuram is a village in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh. It comes in eastern ghat and less known among people but beauty is at its best. Its almost a flat trek with some river streams on the way. One can witness natural fish pedicure in the pool. Its very relaxing, free of cost and no time limitation ? There are natural water slides too and usually people will cook food by the side of pool, which is also a good experience.

7. Dudhiware waterfall

Dudhiware waterfall is located at Lonawala with approximate waterfall height of 135 feet. One can enjoy thrilling waterfall rappelling here. Local experts helps conduct activity in safe manners. One can visit nearby Lohagad fort and reverse waterfall on top of the fort. Speed of the wind is so high that it takes water falling down up. Start of monsoon is the best season to do waterfall rappelling. Once rain increases its bit difficult and risky to do rappelling. We group of 20 people did rappelling here and I was the one to do it last. Till my turn comes rain intensity increased and waterfall was at its fullest ?

Glad that you liked the content. You can plan these places next time you come to India

Oops… I am not sure how I missed adding information on first place Agumbe rainforest. Here is the missing info:

Agumbe is hill station in Shimoga district, 380 km from Bangalore and 130 km from Mangalore, perfect weekend destination for people who want to come closer to nature. It comes in western ghat and surrounded by deep forest. It is called Cherapunji of South India since you will witness rain throughout the year. Forest is so dense that you will not feel most of the rain. Sure you will come across lot of refreshing water streams. Koodlu Teertha is one of the popular waterfall in this area. Beware of leeches while passing though forest. Best thing to avoid leeches is to walk quickly without stopping in between, before reaching open dry area to remove leeches. If you stop in the middle of path to remove leeches, by the time you remove, new leeches will attack. There is nothing to get worried of leaches as they are not actually harmful, and can be removed by simply rolling them on the skin instead of directly plucking out.

Nice !!
