Before you Selfie - is the location being featured ?

Dear Local Guides,

I propose a thought. As Local Guides, in this age of higher quality mobile phone photography, we need to be aware of what we are posting in our quest to help others learn about new places while making sure that the quality of our contributions remains high. As you visit places that you want to highlight on Connect and/or on Google Maps, put yourself in the viewers’ shoes.

Questions to ask yourself before taking the picture:

  • What is the prominent attraction at the location ?
  • Are you close enough/far enough to capture the ambiance of the place ?
  • Should you take several photos from different angles to get a feel for the place ?
  • Does a selfie make sense or is it taking up valuable space on the photo that could best be used to show the location ? Usually a selfie is not appropriate as you are not part of that location, unless you decide to remain there forever…

I just wanted to share these thoughts as many times I see an interesting location cited in the subject of a post and all I end up seeing is pictures of the photographer and nothing about the place.

Happy Guiding !!

Nick

I agree @Nick-Hobgood people posting selfies to Maps can find themselves in violation of the User Contributed Content Policy.

Hi @PaulPavlinovich with the advent of face recognition software I would be in full support of an algorithm that detects faces and if they represent more than say 30% of the image surface, they are automatically deleted.

I’ve heard rumour that this is actually happening with background cleanups - at least I see the symptoms of people saying hey where did my photos go, or only I can see my photos - no-one else sees them :).
