Beauty of Kashmir - Episode 7 - Visit to Famous Saffron Shop in Kashmir.

Caption: The storefront photo.

On the day when I checked out from Houseboat as I mentioned in my Beauty of Kashmir - Episode 6 - Houseboat Stay at Dal Lake, Srinagar post, we headed towards Pahalgam. Pahalgam is a small hill station in the Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir, India. It is located in the foothills of the Himalayas along the banks of the Lidder River. I am going to share more about my Pahalgam visit in next episodes. So, in this episode I am going to share about my visit to one of the authentic shop of Saffron named as Kissar Kesar at Lethirpora village in Pulwama district of Jammu & Kashmir.

Saffron is a spice derived from the dried stigmas of the saffron crocus (Crocus sativus). It is a highly prized spice with a distinct, sweet aroma and flavour sometime sour. It is used to flavour a variety of dishes and is also known for its medicinal properties. Saffron season in Kashmir is a special time of the year when the region’s famed saffron flowers are in full bloom. The saffron season in Kashmir starts in the last week of October and continues until the middle of November. This is a unique time of the year when the saffron fields in Kashmir are a spectacular sight to behold. The saffron flowers are a beautiful orange colour and the saffron aroma fills the air. During the saffron season, the farmers in the region collect the saffron flowers and the saffron is then processed to make the saffron spice. During this season no one is allowed to enter the saffron field. As I visited in Summer so I got a chance to visit saffron field.

As a part of their culture they offer free Cavha (Kashmiri Tea) as I mentioned in my Beauty of Kashmir - Episode 5 - Evening Shikara Ride at Dal Lake, Srinagar about the tea.

Hello dear @Rohan10 ,

Great…well presented post - I agree with our @TusharSuradkar that the store front photo is nice - well captured too.

Unfortunately, Kashmir has only been in my bucket list, so far - you have tempted me too much - so started conversations with my wife for further planning.

Enjoyed reading your interesting post with beautiful pictures…

I’m carefully reading so that, it will help me in my planning.

How many days tour you had?

Agency booking or individual travel?

Thanks for sharing.

Best regards

That’s amazing to me that my post made you plan a Kashmir visit. It is must visit to place. I recommend you to visit in March- April as there would be Tulip flower season and that garden is open only in this season throughout the year. I did contact the Srinagar-based travel agency for Srinagar Airport to Srinagar Airport package for 7 days and 6 nights. From Mumbai to Srinagar I did my travel arrangement on my own. It is best to go for the agency that is based in Srinagar in view of cost. Thank you so much @TravellerG sir for taking out time to read my post and also for your positive feedback. Thanks again.

Very well constructed post @Rohan10 . I am surprised that I never paid attention to Any kesar shop whole on my trip to Kashmir. But I must visit one when I got next.

Thank you for sharing the importance of kesar. This reminds me that this probably gets a tag of geographical indications.

I would personally contact you for the agency details - since you have already experienced once, it is better to hire them, if they are good /reasonable.

really as earlier, I enjoyed reading this post too, I didn’t feel bored while reading your kashmir series and as you mentioned saffron, I remembered a cup of tea with few pieces of saffron which was very tasty, and for sure nowadays it is very hard to find pure and authentic saffron in India but as you mentioned kissan kesar in your post more people will know about this shop through your post

by the way how much money did you pay to buy kesar/saffron as I know kesar price is above 1 lakh rupees per kg :joy:

waiting for your next episode where you will talk more about pahalgam @Rohan10

Hi @Prince_Kumar nice to know about your experience about tea. That is called Cavha. It was super rich in taste as well as minerals. Saffron is very costly as the process of collection and storage thereafter is very tedious. I bought it at Rs. 550/- per one gram. But quality is great. Thank you so much for your kind words. I am glad you enjoy reading my post. Thank you again.
