The hilly capital of Plateau state, which is one of the constitutionally recognised states of Nigeria is called Jos, there are so many versions of how the name came about but the most plausible version states that it is a corrupted pronounciation of the local word “Gwash” by foreign tin miners.
The weather in Jos is unlike any you are likely to experience in other parts of Nigeria or Sub-Saharan Africa for that matter, the soil is fertile and the inhabitants have a cool laid back attitude, little wonder that the city has been a magnet for all comers through the years.
But therein lies the sting in the tail, as “all comers” implies that you are going to have the good, the bad and the ugly coming into town, the corollary of which is that various elements will come in with varying doctrines and cause conflict leading to terrible headlines regarding the beastly state of Plateau, an imagery completely conjured by the press.
However, conflict is not peculiar to the Plateau which literally calls herself the home of PEACE & TOURISM, there are other beautiful cities beset with conflicts and the likes i.e; Jerusalem, but people still troop in to marvel at the natural wonders of the city. It is in light of the foregoing that in my spare time I act as a local Google guide, pointing out to the curious mind beset by wanderlust, the hidden gems on the Plateau and it’s environs, as I don’t think a little bad press should deny anybody from experiencing the wonders of the Plateau. Thanks for taking your time to read through this and I hope you are inspired to embark on this adventure.
