There is one activity that we often do at home on our weekend. Namely learn making batik. We do it on the balcony of the house. While enjoying the breeze and birdsong, or enjoying the sound of rain.
What is batik? Making batik is making a motif on the fabric. This is an original work of art from Indonesia. Formerly batik was only made by the royal family. Batik activities are carried out by the sons and daughters of the palace as activities that are full of kerokhanian values that require creativity, patience, concentration, and cleanliness of the soul. Although it looks simple, but in every batik motif scratches, contained deep philosophical meaning. Batik was recognized by UNESCO as one of the world heritages in 2009. And my hometown Yogyakarta declared as Batik Town in the world.
Scratch the wax with a tool called Canting in accordance with the motif that has been made carefully and patiently.
Dip into the dye solution
Close again some motifs with the wax
Dip into the color solution to produce a second color
Lock colors
Dissolve the night with hot water
The fabric is aerated
Done
This is a picture of the making Batik process. This process requires the longest time, and will determine the good and bad quality of batik. Throwing requires patience and care must be taken because otherwise the candle that is too hot will flow outside the motif that was made, and it will damage the resulting motif. As you look, our batik still messy… haha
We usually use Batik for formal occasions or work clothes. Almost all the batik that I have I get from buying. and now I want to try making it myself, somehow the results will be, because I only do it every weekend…
Now, Batik is typical fabric from Indonesia, from many city not just Yogyakarta. Batik Lasem, Solo, Yogya, Pekalongan, etc… But each other have a specifics character. Which prefer do you like @Bobba
