BATIK, Creating Beauty in Silence

Have you ever imagined having a piece of cloth that you painted yourself with beautiful motifs? Especially if you use the beautiful fabric as a shirt, hat, bandana, scarf, etc., of course there is a special taste right?

In Indonesia this painted cloth is called Batik. Many batik motifs are inspired by the environment which later became the hallmark of an area. For example batik with flora and fauna motifs.

Making batik is easy, but it takes extraordinary patience from its maker. First we have to make a pattern on paper, then we trace the pattern onto a white cloth.

After that begins the process of mencanting, which closes the pattern with a layer of hot liquid wax according to the picture.

In this coating requires patience, so that this layer can penetrate to the back of the fabric. Its function is as a barrier so that the paint does not overflow everywhere during coloring.

Next we dye the fabric as desired. I tried to make batik with sunflower motif. Because it was the first time it had held a canting, many candles were spilled & there were several layers that did not penetrate until the colors mixed.

If the coloring is finished then dry in the sun for a while & then the cloth is put in liquid waterglass added with water so that the color does not fade. And dried again.

The next process is illumination, which removes the remaining wax that is still attached to the fabric by boiling. To speed up the process usually boiled water mixed with water glass, then washed & finished.

Because it requires a high concentration when making batik, batik painters will usually slam in a quiet place. Handmade batik is an expensive work of art.

In Indonesia, especially the Javanese culture, there are a number of batik motifs that become standard. For example Sido Mukti batik commonly used by brides, Taruntum batik for parents of the bride, Liris batik, Parang batik etc.

Maybe next time I will tell you about the batik motif and its philosophy. And this time I want to greet a friend who has inspired.

Hello @Moestika

Is Batik the same with tie and dye?.

During my days in the secondary school we practice tie and dye in Fine and Applied Art. I was good at it then. We can create beautiful colors and designs on a white cloth, black and also white handkerchief.

Batik is good, I will like to have one of the clothes. :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks for sharing this with us here on connect.

Best regards.

Hi @Austinelewex

Batik is a fabric that is painted using canting and liquid wax so that it forms high artistic-value paintings on a cloth. The results of this fabric can be made anything, including ties and clothes. In some places the bulkhead is used not only by liquid wax, some use starch, some use rice. The art of batik is old art and there are several techniques used including stamp, screen printing and printing techniques. The best are those that are painted using canting with liquid wax. Not only is the end result beautiful, but the hidden social message in the name & picture of the batik reflects the wearer. I’m glad you are an expert in this field, even with different techniques.

Motif batik kota Batunya menarik juga, ya, Bu @Moestika ?

Ada apel, sayur, sama jagung.

Warnanya juga cerah.

Btw itu motifnya nggambar sendiri, Bu? Atau gambarnya sudah ada tinggal diwarnain aja?

Seru banget kayaknya :grinning: :grinning:

Hi @AniaKiser You inspired me to tell about batik. Maybe later I will tell about the story behind the picture. Like me when making sunflower batik, it’s because I have a sunflower garden & people will recognize me when I wear it, ha ha. There is also an apple & strawberry batik, meaning that batik originated from my city, because my city produces apples & strawberries. Not only that, some make batik taruntum, inspired by an old love story that blossomed again hi hi hi, and many other types. thank you for making me happy.

Sweet regards
