Basilica of Siponto (Puglia)

A picture during the sunset of the Basilica of Siponto, the Cathedral of the anciend (and abandoned) town of Siponto, in Puglia.

The Basilica has a square plant and it is a classical example of the “romanico pugliese” architecture. Close to it there is the Archeologic Park of Siponto, with the ruins of the ancient Paleochristian Basilica (IV Century a.C) close the the Romanic Church. A modern artistic structure (made by metallic mesh), simulate the original building of the Paleochistian Basilica.

Hey @Alecat ,

Thanks for sharing your photo, you’ve managed to capture it at the perfect moment when the sun sets. What more can you tell us about your experience at the basilica? What is there to see in Puglia?

Ciao @LuigiZ ,

I used an LG V30 with wide camera that is very useful for architecture and landscape photography

Hello @MoniDi ,

in Puglia there are a lot of beautiful cities. The church of S. Maria di Siponto is an excellent example of the Apulian romanesque architecture, between the XI and the XIII century.

Close to Siponto there is the city of Manfredonia, with its National Archeological Museum, famous to houses the “Stele Daune”, stones funerary elements made by the local ancient inhabitants in the VIII century B.C.

Not very far from Siponto (about 1 hour by car) I suggest to visit another beautiful place, the town of Ascoli Satriano.

There you can find a small Archeological Museum that houses the Marbles of Ascoli Satriano, a complex of Marbles supposed to be the feet of a table found inside a local King tomb (attached you can find a picture I toke during my visit some months ago).
