Barshabaran festival (বর্ষবরণ উৎসব); A festival where combinedly represent Bengali tradition and culture!

Hello LG friends,
Tomorrow is Pahela Baishakh, Bengali New Year 1432 (The first day of the Bengali year is known as Pahela Boishakh). We Bengalis celebrate this day as the ‘Bengali eve festival (বর্ষবরণ উৎসব)’. The day is celebrated as a national festival in Bangladesh. As such, it is considered a universal folk festival of Bengalis. Everyone will move forward, leaving behind the achievements and failures of the current year. This festival is celebrated in Bangladesh every year on April 14. This date is determined according to the Bengali calendar.

Pohela Boishakh inspires us to avoid all narrow-mindedness and narrow-mindedness and build a liberal and moral way of life. It removes all the sorrows and weariness in our minds and inspires us to live with new enthusiasm. We, Bengalis, are a proud nation in the world. On the occasion of Pohela Boishakh, this sense of nationalism and Bengaliness within us gets a new lease of life and is energized.

In Bangladesh, the day is celebrated through various activities such as processions, fairs, eating Pantabhat, opening of halkhata, etc. The traditional greeting for the Bengali New Year is ‘Shubh Nababarsha’ (শুভ নববর্ষ).

Baisakhi Fair (বৈশাখী মেলা):
Fairs are held in various places in our country on the occasion of the Bengali New Year. This fair is basically called Baisakhi Mela. These fairs last for a week or a month. Every year, a big fair is held in Ramna Park in the capital Dhaka. Apart from this, fairs are held in village markets, river banks, and temple premises. People attend very enthusiastically. Various types of products including daily necessities, various types of cottage industries, toys, etc. are gathered in this fair. In addition, various entertainment programs including Jatra, puppet dance, Nagardola, circus are organized at those fairs. Various types of sweets are also available in the fair.

Mangal Shobhajatra (মঙ্গল শোভাযাত্রা):
An essential part of the Baisakhi festival in Dhaka on this day is the Mangal Shobhajatra. This procession, initiated by the Institute of Fine Arts, Dhaka University, starts on the morning of Pohela Boishakh and circulates various streets of the city before returning to the Institute of Fine Arts. This procession portrays rural life and contemporary Bengal.

Halkhata (হালখাতা):
Businessmans close their old ledgers and start new ones during a special ceremony on Bengali New Year’s Day. They believe this will strengthen their business relationships with customers.

May the Bengali new year bring happiness, prosperity and peace to your life. May every day of the year be inspiring.

সবাইকে আগাম নববর্ষের শুভেচ্ছা!
(Happy Bengali new year in advance to everyone!)

Your post just reminded me of so many fond memories. Pohela Boishakh is just an ordinary day in the US. But back home we used to have so much fun on this day. Making traditional food, dressing up in traditional outfit and indulging in the mouthwatering food were just a few example of what we looked forward to. I couldn’t love this day enough. Thank you for sharing the detail and significance of the day. I am looking forward to our Boishakhi mela in DFW on the 31st of May.
