Balkan Easter trip - part 2

It’s time for the second part of my post about the Balkan trip we did this time last year!

Staying at home makes you rewind to all those great travel memories.

In the middle of our Balkan trip, we found ourselves in Tirana, Albania. By the time we arrived at the coach station, a lot of friendly people were approaching us, offering us a taxi lift. As it was early morning, we sat at a cafe that was in the station area, where we met a taxi driver who spoke Greek fluently! Very soon we had our transport and accommodation solved and loads of local tips!

Tirana is a beautiful city with a lot of green areas and a massive park called Grand park of Tirana, with an artificial lake. I think that the highlight of our short stay in Tirana was the amazing dinner we had at Oda, a traditional Albanian restaurant with delicious food. The atmosphere was very traditional and welcoming.

Our next destination after Tirana was Thessaloniki, my hometown in Greece. We knew that this would be a very long journey, but we were looking forward to going home and having some proper rest. It’s always good to be back home.

Thessaloniki welcomed us with sunny weather and I already knew where I wanted to head first. The gorgeous Ano Poli, to see the city walls and the view from above.

Thessaloniki is a great place to visit. Long walks by the sea, iced coffee at the port area, and delicious food: souvlaki, gyros and lots more greek dishes that always go with wine or beer.

Staying in Thessaloniki for a few days gave us a good rest, so we were ready for the final destination of our trip: Sofia, Bulgaria.

Sofia is a very vibrant and unique city. We could see the white mountains while walking in the city centre and the nightlife was fun! Sadly I had some work to do there so we didn’t have the time to go for some hiking. But next time will most definitely do!

This is where our Balkan trip came to an end. We sadly had to return back to London, where work and responsibilities were awaiting. But one thing is sure; the people we met and the fun memories we made will always accompany us :slightly_smiling_face:

Safe and fun trips to all!

Hi @Effie_1 ,

I think you did great trip on the Balkan! I am curious which country did you like the most? As I’ve read you’ve been in my country Bulgaria as well. Did you like Sofia? Which places in the town did you visit?

If you are traveling one more time to Bulgaria, I recommend you to visit those cities as well: Plovdiv, Koprivshtitsa, Veliko Tarnovo and Tryavna, if you have so much time. I think you would like them and there is a lot of history in those cities that you can learn from.

I’ve never been to Albania although it’s very close but it’s in my wish list to visit the seaside as I’ve heard they have very beautiful beaches.

Greece is my favourite to go on the seaside during the summer so I’ve been there in many places and I am planing to go on a cruise to the beautiful islands that it has.

Hi @PoliMC , thank you so much for the tips! I remember visiting Veda house for tea and muffins. It was a delicious experience and the atmosphere of that place was great.

I have to admit that I loved Bosnia the most, because of all the lovely friendly people we met and the beauty of the nature! You surely have to go there for trekking, canyoning and rafting. I’m looking forward to going back and visiting also Serbia, North Macedonia and Romania!

Cheers,

Effie

Hi @Effie_1 ,

Thanks for your reply!

I cannot open the link of Veda house, the link doesn’t work. Could you please link it again?

Yeah, I’ve heard many times about Bosnia and Herzegovina and I really want to go there. Did you try there rafting? I’ve never tried.

Thanks, @PoliMC , link fixed! Yes, we did rafting with Rafting center Drina-Tara, they were the most friendly people and their hospitality was top! I highly recommend them. The picture with the little wooden huts I have in my post Balkan Easter Trip part 1 is from their campsite!

Hi @Effie_1 ,

Thanks for editing the link!

I’ve heard actually about this rafting center and I know also that there is the most incredible rafting. It looks amazing! I wish one day to try it!
