Baek In-je house Museum/ 백인제 가옥

Built in 1913, 2,640 square meters, located in between two Palaces. This area called Bukchon where high ranked ministers used to live in Joseon Dynasty.

It has beautiful ceiling of Byeoldang, shaped the traditional Korean fan. All of them are hand made in those times.

Doctor Baek was the third owner of this house and he was kidnapped by North Korea later before the Korean war. His widow, Mrs. Choi lived here with family until 2008 and donated this house to Seoul city 2009, to open to the public from 2015.

In order to enter inside of this house, need to book the guided tour in advance. On every Fridays, 16:00, there is English tour. Rest of days, 4~5 times, there are Korean guided tours. On Wednesdays & Saturdays from July to August, they open until 21:00 as a special night opening(19:00 Korean guided tour is available).

There is free audio guide, even if you cannot enter into the house, but still better than without any explanation.

Admission is free. This graceful house is still amazing at any season but guide said in spring and autumn, it is much more awesome with colorful flowers and leaves.

The guest house was sold to one of conglomerate companies and the group uses it as reception hall now, so we cannot visit only that building.

Admission is free, and audio guide is also free.

It is less than 15 min walk from Insadong, 10 min away from Ikseondong.

Thank you so much, @KIM19 , for this very well detailed post about the Baek In-je House. It looks like a small oasis, especially inside with all of this wooden work. Was this your first time visiting this museum?

P.S.: Please note that I relabeled your post and it now appears in the Travel section, as I think that it fits best with the theme of the board. I don’t if you are aware of this, but in there people love sharing and discussing what interesting places they encountered on their trip or a hidden gem that they found in their city. To learn more about the Travel board, please feel free to check the following article - Welcome to the Travel board.

@KlaudiyaG Yes it was my first visit even if I live several decades in Seoul, I was not aware of this house. Funny thing is the neighbour of this house, is public libraray that I went sometimes when I was at school.

I feel you, even I don’t know every corner of my own city. There were times when I’ve learned some amazing places that I wasn’t aware that they even existed from friends of mine, which are living for a couple of years in Sofia. But that’s life I guess, you can learn and discover new things and places every day, which is so cool.

Thank you so much for your reply, @KIM19 !
