Backpacking Across Europe: June 2023 #EuroMeetup2023

Update: See a few comments down below for my trip notes for each of my stops (excl. Munich).

Hey folks, I just wanted to share my travel plans on here and ask the community for tips, advice and recommendations on places to visit during my 12 days backpacking adventure across Europe which also includes joining in on the #EuroMeetup2023 organised by @TorM and assisted by @JanVanHaver (apologies if I’m not stating it correctly as I’m not sure about the management side  ). You can read up about the meetup here and it’s never too late to still join in the revelry! All the details are in that post!

Anyway, my travel plans are:

  • 18 June - Fly from Manchester, UK to The Hague, Netherlands
  • 19 June - The Hague
  • 20 June - Travel by coach to Luxembourg, Luxembourg
  • 21 June - Luxembourg, travel by coach to Munich, Germany (overnight in coach… )
  • 22 June - Munich for #EuroMeetup2023
  • 23 June - Munich for #EuroMeetup2023
  • 24 June - Munich for #EuroMeetup2023
  • 25 June - Travel by coach to Salzburg, Austria
  • 26 June - Salzburg
  • 27 June - Travel by train to Vienna, Austria
  • 28 June - Vienna
  • 29 June - Fly back to Manchester

Generally, I have about a day and a half in The Hague, Salzburg and Vienna, about a day in Luxembourg and multiple days in Munich. To keep my budget as low as possible, I opted to travel by coach whenever possible and to stay at hostels in shared dormitories. I’m not sure how I will cope with sharing a sleeping space with strangers and I sure hope the coaches are comfortable!

Anyway, I would really appreciate it if you all could help suggests must-see places in each of the locations (except Munich because Torben has that covered! :sunglasses: ) and definitely do recommend eating spots. I love cafes and trying out local pastries/cakes. Dinner will be interesting as I will be eating alone at times but fire away with your suggestions!

Needless to say, I’ll be recording videos and snapping photos throughout my trip. I will try my best to post daily on Instagram (follow me here) and if I have the time, I’ll update you all here on Connect as well. Videos for the Go Loco YouTube channel will have to wait until I’m back on the computer and able to edit them first although I am going to force myself to use the YouTube video editor and try making some quick Shorts with that… so who knows, I might be able to push out a few videos when I can.

Obviously, I’m prioritising spending my time enjoying the travels and worrying less about editing and posting on social media  . This travel opportunity doesn’t come very often (I last planned something like this in 2020 and that fell through when Covid struck) so I’m hoping to make the most out of it.

I will also be doing my own research on places to visit using Google Maps, creating custom lists etc and post travels, I hope to share the process with everyone.

Side note, I will be using the hashtag #EuroMeetup2023 for all my posts related to this travel plan and I hope other attendees will do the same as well. The #EuroMeetup2023 in Munich is shaping up to be very exciting and is possibly double/triple the size of the last event in Ghent… unfortunately lots of stress for the organisers! And if you’re attending, you can also order your own t-shirt locally and wear it at the meet-up. Details on the t-shirt can be found here.

Edit:

I’ve decided to share my costs here as well just so folks have an idea of how much it costs. There are probably ways to save more money perhaps but this is about as low as I am willing to go. I’ve listed the cost based on the travel/movement plan so it’s easier to follow.

  • Return flight from Manchester, UK to Amsterdam, Netherlands = GBP 235.57
  • Train from Schiphol airport to The Hague = EUR 8.82
  • Hostel in The Hague (2 nights, 4 pax dorm) = EUR 80.20
  • Coach to Luxembourg = GBP 25.97 (~8 hrs travel time)
  • Airbnb in Luxembourg (1 night, private room) = EUR 99.40
  • Coach to Munich = GBP 25.48 (~9hrs travel time)
  • Airbnb in Munich (3 nights, whole apartment) = GBP 101.40 (I’m sharing this with Local Guide @PeteMHW so the cost shown is per person)
  • Coach to Salzburg = GBP 12.99 (~2 hrs travel time)
  • Hostel in Salzburg (2 nights, 6 pax dorm) = EUR 59.50
  • Train to Vienna = EUR 18.99 (~2.5 hrs travel time)
  • Hostel in Vienna (2 nights, 6 pax dorm) = EUR 81.00

So, in summary:

  • Accommodation = EUR 438.30
  • Travel = EUR 377.52

And I was actually surprised at the total cost; I’d expected/hoped it would be lower. So, I guess, backpacking isn’t exactly cheap too!

@AdrianLunsong It was my dream since child hood to travel to Europe using backpacking and hitchhiking but I know now this dream will never come true but I am very happy that you are doing this and will share your travel stories with us

The roles are adequately described @AdrianLunsong , no worries there.

And somehow that view of Manchester look familiar to me… how could that be?

@AdrianLunsong You’re living the dream!! It’ll be great if you can take us around Europe with you, but most importantly, take the time to take everything in. Backpacking on your own is a special experience and I love, love doing it, too!

I was in Vienna back in March, so let me share some lists. Here are some places to see and some places to eat.

I didn’t go in most of the sights, so that fits with the budget-friendly concept, right? But I left notes for the ones which are worth paying the entrance fee to, if you’re into art/places to get nice views of Vienna.

For the places to eat, well, I also traveled on my own, so I tried street food places mostly. The Central Train & Bus Station is a fantastic place to try traditional and international cuisine! If you like poke bowls, head to Bali Bowls (on -1, I think). I also added two of the most popular Vienna cafes to the list; if you manage to go in without waiting for too long, please take photos to share!

@Muhammad_Usman I shall carry the flag for all of us who dreamed of backpacking across the world but never got the chance to do so! It is also a big dream of mine so I’m glad that I now have the chance. Hopefully everything will go smoothly!

I have plans to meet up with an ex-classmate that I’ve known since my primary school days, so this trip is part catching up, part exploring The Hague. I’ve never been here so I’m excited to explore the area with the help of my friend being the true local, local guide! We’ve earmarked some of the places to visit in the links below as well as some potential food/drinks stops.

If you’re wondering why I’ve got Yemeni and Uyghur restaurants in my list, well, my friend recommended them and since I’ve tried Dutch food in Amsterdam before, I figured that I’d give the Yemeni/Uyghur options a try. Also, I’m the type that eat as I explore so I’m prone to stopping constantly for nibbles whenever I find something nice to go to. Using Google Maps to explore is a great first step, but there’s nothing quite like finding a unique place by chance!

  • I’m really (x infinity) really excited about this place because it’s been on my wish list for the longest of time to do the Sound of Music tour. I love the movie and I used to sing the songs frequently as a kid growing up (I know I’m weird!). I’m trying my best not to raise my expectations too high but I’m hoping it’s going to be EPIC! Also, in the hostel that I’m staying at, they do a screening of the movie at 8pm every evening. I probably need to re-watch the movie before I go and make sure the song album is on my phone so that I can rehearse the songs! :joy: :joy: :joy: The cost of the tour is GBP 53.83 (I bought my ticket from another site).

@JanVanHaver A shame you didn’t get great weather throughout your stay though! Apparently el Nino is kicking off

@Maximilianozalazar Thanks so much! I’ve never used the YouTube editor before so it will be interesting! Plus, I’m not bringing my laptop with me :scream: so it will be interesting how I will get by with managing my photos/videos, doing edits etc.

@DeniGu Thanks for sharing those two lists! I’ve added them for easy reference on the go!! And the places you’ve picked all looked amazing!! I’ve got limited time in each place so I will have to be selective in where I go… I mean… there’s only so many croissants and cakes that I can eat in a day right?!

But I’m like a curious cat when I travel so I’m prone to go down side streets to check out obscure, olde-worlde, quirky shops and I do stop a lot to take photos and buy snacks! And yeah, I rarely spend money on entrance fee to see a place. I’m such a cheapskate!! I wish that they would do something like in the UK where most museums/galleries are FREE to the public with an option to drop a donation.

I also bought a journal that I’m going to go old-school and write things down, doodle on the coach etc. :joy: Will see if I even get to 5 pages or more…

Your Euro trip sounds epic! I’ve done similar backpacking journeys across Europe and it’s always a blast. For The Hague, definitely visit the Mauritshuis Museum for art and stroll through Binnenhof. In Salzburg, Mozart’s birthplace and Mirabell Palace are must-sees, and Vienna’s Schönbrunn Palace is stunning. For cafes, try Café Central in Vienna for a taste of local pastries. I also use Esim Europe for easy connectivity across borders—super handy. Enjoy every moment and make sure to capture those memories.
