I still remember that beautiful morning: a day with a blue sky, a bright sun and a lot, a great desire to leave the house. Finally!
Yes, I’m talking about May 2020, the lockdown for this Covid-19 pandemic was practically over (at least here in Italy) and finally it was possible to leave the house even for trips outside the region.
What better occasion to take the children to spend a few hours in the middle of nature and breathe a lot of fresh and clean air: a nice picnic in the woods!
No sooner said than done: we took the car and after less than an hour on the road we reached our destination: the City of Rock!
This is a wonder of Nature itself, a unique phenomenon here on the Asiago Plateau: they are rock-limestone formations that have been “shaped and formed” by the succession of glaciations over thousands of years.
These vary both in length and height and their observation from the top of the mountain gives a semblance that there is a city with houses of rock that protrude from the ground!
Some of these limestone formations were subsequently excavated internally by man both to have a shelter for the night when cattle were grazed and to have shelter from bombing during the First World War (and traces of this still remain with the multiple trenches still visible).
Along the way you can admire many examples of these structures … unfortunately for us we interrupted our exploration at the first rock house: once we entered to explore it we had the bitter surprise to find inside a carcass of some animal which was most likely a last predator’s dinner.
In fact, due to the lockdown, wild animals have again taken possession of their territory and not finding the obstacle of the presence of man have also ventured into places they have not explored. In fact, even the wolves have approached the cities and had been sighted in those places.
So we decided not to go too far from the car and the paths (also because we were the only tourists in the area).
Despite a bit of fear, we still took the time to admire these magnificent landscapes and enjoy absolute silence that charged us with body and spirit!

And then it was also time to return, but we are all happy to have spent a day in nature where we had the sky as a roof and the woods as walls: better home than this where can you find it?
Here my review of this place in Google Maps!
A curiosity: along the way back it is possible to find the oldest bell in Veneto (dating back to the year 1280!)
