The Hagia Sophia Mosque was opened to worship of Muslims again 52 years later with the prayer performed on Friday, June 28, 2013. The Hagia Sophia Museum of Trabzon, today the mosque, was built in the time of Manuel Komnenos I (1238-1263) of the kings of the Empire of Trebizond. It is located west of the bell tower church, dating back to 1427. The remains of three apse chapels located north of the church date from an earlier period. After the conquest of Trabzon by Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror, the building was converted into a mosque and became a foundation. The Hagia Sophia has attracted the attention of travellers and researchers who have visited the city for centuries. During World War I, the hospital was used as a warehouse, and later as a mosque. Between 1958-1962 years, it was restored in cooperation with the General Directorate of Foundations and Edinburgh University and opened to visitors as a museum after 1964. A beautiful example of late Byzantine churches, the structure is planned with a square cross and has a high central dome. The building has three naves, the entrance hall called Nartex. The five-pointed ones in the middle of the naves end with a round apse. Nartex has a chapel on it. There are three main entrance to the north, west and south. The medallions containing geometric interlaced decorations on the portico facades in the north and west, and the mucarnassic niches on the west facades carry the characteristics of Seljuk stone processing. The most glorious facade of the building is south. In the section with an important stonework, the creation of Adam and Eve is described as a frieze as relief. The main dome of the building is located in the part of the mausoleum of the place made of multi-colored marble in the opussectile style. The frescoes that make up the important part of the decorations of the Hagia Sophia have animated biblical issues: The main depiction in the dome is the Hz. Jesus is the pantacrator who distorts the divine aspect of Jesus. There is a small shrine below it, and there is a small shrine of angels. Twelve apostles are depicted between the windows. There are different compositions in the pandantives. The birth of Jesus, baptism, crucifixion, and the day of the Apocalypse are described. The portraits are displayed in circular medallions on the back arches of the building. The church is also used in the church’s church.
