Update (2/1/21): I’ve added the video to the Closing Ceremony at the end of this post so that you can watch the Awards getting presented and the announcement of all winners! Enjoy! And once again, congrats to all winners and thanks so much for your participation!
They say that beauty lies in the eye of the beholder! In the case of our winners of the #CommunityPhotoChallenge, their photos have a universal beauty to them that took our collective breathes away! As part of the lead up to Community Live 2020, we asked you all to take part in a fun photo challenge and boy, did you all participate!
Unlike a regular challenge, the photos you submitted had to be photos that you’ve uploaded to Google Maps! So this introduced an interesting conundrum since photos uploaded to Google Maps usually needs to be functional first and foremost, and beauty doesn’t necessarily need to be there! But what I was keen to do with the challenge was to encourage you all to think and aim to make your functional photos beautiful too! Or rather, for you to realise that functional photos can still be beautiful.
By the way, what I mean by ‘functional photos’ are photos that prioritises information over aesthetics e.g. a photo showing opening hours should be a simple shot that clearly shows the needed information.
There were many good entries but eventually, they were filtered down to a smaller number and Connect and Google Moderators then voted for their top three favourites! The final tally revealed the top three entries with the most votes and they are, in no particular order:
My best photo published on Maps in 2020 - #CommunityPhotoChallenge by @FlavioDA gave us a truly breathtaking view of Lago di Braies and the mountainous peaks that surrounds it! I could literally spend all day here just taking photos and to admire the views! Gosh, so many Instagram moments to be had here! Or as a kid of the 80s/90s… so many Kodak moments!
#CommunityPhotoChallenge : ZELENCI NATURE PRESERVE/Slovenia by @lajnhart is another shot that really captures nature at its best! Check those perfect reflections off the crystal blue waters! And you should definitely have a visit of the Zelenci nature reserve on Google Maps and enjoy all the various photo uploads there! I’m sure you can all agree that this is another stunning entry!
#CommunityPhotoChallenge : Johnson’s Farm Produce (Indiana, USA) by @Sheetal_RS is a fantastic exercise of taking a selfie (usually a no-no in my books when it comes to whether we should upload those kind of photos on Google Maps) and making it appropriate for Google Maps! It simply shows you the type of fun/photo opportunities that you can have at Johnson’s Farm!
Please join me in congratulating the winners of the #CommunityPhotoChallenge Award! I think that they are well deserved and awesome! And for all you readers here I hope that the next time you take a photo and mindlessly upload them to Google Maps, just pause a moment to consider whether you can capture a better shot or even if the shot is necessary to be added to Google Maps! As I always say, quality over quantity! Maybe, make that your goal for 2021!
You can watch the Closing Ceremony video below and re-live the excitement of the Awards as they are are announced together with the amazing winners!
