Avenue Of The Giants

Sometimes work takes me North of the Bay Area. I love driving through the redwoods when I’m not in a rush. I’ve done the touristy things as the drive through tree and one log cabin years ago. I learned in this recent trip from one of the docents that volunteered at the visitor’s center the park has free WiFi which is great because I have no signal in the area and once you leave the main road, the twists and turns can easily get you turned around and lost.

There’s camp grounds but those requires advance booking. Many people park and go for hikes. Rule of thumb is any trash you bring in with you, you also carry out as there isn’t trash cans any where.

Hey @Twister411 ,

Thanks for sharing your photos with us. Do you drive through the redwoods often?

I find it scary when I have no signal in a place I have never been before, especially if it is in the forest. There should be some markers on the trees for the trails in the woods, shouldn’t there? When is the best time to go hiking?

@MoniDi I go up once every free years. The the main Highway going up is fine there’s plenty of traffic every all the roads are marked. Would you leave the main road not all the roads are clearly marked. The Avenue of the Giants has its own road and passes some small towns, campsite, and the Visitor Center. When I drove up it was Veterans Day. The Visitor Center was closed and I didn’t see any of the Rangers out and about. I saw a few cars going the opposite direction. I had stopped at the visitor center and went across the road into the Groves of trees and was walking around. That got a bit creepy because there was no one around and I realized if I did get hurt out there, I might not find anyone to help me. I decided to leave and would come back through on my way back home.

I world say the best time to go is early morning through to mid afternoon. I took my pictures around 1pm and it’s much darker with all the trees blocking our the sun.

Hi @Twister411 ,

I love being in the nature and forests and that ray on sunlight is beautiful! Do you camp a lot? I only do hiking during summer time, because I find it relaxing and very energizing. There’s so many beautiful parks and canyons in the US I hope to see soon!

Hi @Twister411 ,

As @MoniDi mentioned, it would be great to share some tips that you know on how to best be prepared for hiking and when is the best time to do it.

Did you know that there is an ongoing thread Where to go hiking according to Local Guides where many Local Guides share their knowledge and experience. I think you will find that article quite interesting. : )

Thank you for the information @Twister411

Talking about Redwoods, I have been recently in Miur Woods, where there is no mobile connection, nor free wifi. This is quite funny, because to be allowed to park in there, you have to make a reservation online, but to make a reservation you have to drive for miles, to reach a place where there is internet connection. In my case, I decided to visit Muir beach instead, and to return to Muir Woods the following days

Your photos are beautiful. Looks like you had a great day @Twister411

@TsekoV I started hiking again. I did it on and off a long time ago. @KimberlyAnnG and I will start up more hiking after the new year. @ErmesT the rules for Muir woods is there because of the amount of traffic. There’s actually several parks that are implementing the reservation system to ensure that people can actually park their cars, but it also servers as a way for them to preserve. The increase foot traffic has some adverse effects to the trails.

Do you go hiking to places around your city @Twister411 or do you prefer to have a list of places that you want to go and see?

Me personally I always enjoy the hills that are around my hometown but I am also eager to see new places too.

Which is your favorite mountain you have been so far to?

@TsekoV I’ve been to several places in San Francisco but I have lists and lists of places I want to explorer. The hardest part is finding time to do this. It’s even better if I can get some friends to go along.

I was hoping to go to the Point Reyes lighthouse in October and wanted to bring some of the summit attendees with me but it was closed for repairs. Hopefully this summer I’ll get to go and have pictures to share. Point Reyes is roughly an hour away. I was there last Spring whole my daughter had a meeting with Greater National Farallones committee and got to wander for a few hours.

I agree with you @Twister411 . It is hard to find time to go and check all of your must-go places. But any time you happen to visit a new place, the feeling is so great and you feel like you discovered a new part of your own self. I love this feeling.

I must say that I am also quite curious to learn more about Point Reyes and your experience being there. This place sounds so interesting, hopefully you will share more about it in some of your future posts. : )
