Authentic Indian breakfast - Poha

Today I was having Poha in breakfast and thought to share about it here-
It’s an authentic North Indian breakfast, you will find here easily. There are lot of variations(not to be confused with the one made using flattened rice or chivda). It’s mainly eaten in breakfast but you can eat it in snacks as well.
Here we have Bread Poha-

It is very light food, easy and fast to prepare, can be packed for a trip, kids like it(don’t add too much spices).

Ingredients(mentioned in bold are must have)-

  • Bread slices(Here used is white bread but as it’s not good for health, you can replace it with brown bread) - 10 medium sized slices
  • Vegetables(Tomato, Onion, Capsicum, Lettuce, etc.) - 1/4th in volume(compared) compared to breads
  • Curry leaves(Kadhi patta) - 10-15 leaves
  • Coriander leaves(Dhaniya) - 3 tbsp chopped
  • Black Mustard seeds(rai ke daane) - 2 tsp
  • Vigna mungo (Urad dal) - 2 tbsp
  • Chana dal(Split chickpea or Baby chickpea) - 2 tbsp
  • Water - 50-75ml
  • Chillies - 2 chopped
  • Powdered spices - Salt, Red chilly powder, Turmeric, Chaat Masala, etc. - according to taste
  • Sugar - 1tsp (just for slight sweet essence)
  • Oil or ghee - 2tbsp
  • Peanuts - 2-3 tbsp
  • Lemons - 1tbsp juice

How to prepare-

  1. Lit the pan(or kadhai) till its moderately hot and add 2 tbsp of oil. Add mustard seeds and curry leaves, till mustard seeds starts making sound.
  2. Add peanuts and pulses and keep stirring till the mixture is cooked.
  3. Add chopped veggies, chillies, sugar and spices and mix/stir thoroughly.
  4. Add bread pieces to pan and mix all. Followed by squeezing lemon onto it.
  5. Put some water evenly distributed to make bread pieces softer.
  6. Keep stirring it all for good 5minutes so bread doesn’t stick and some part of bread doen’t burn.
  7. Serve the Bread Poha in a bowl.
  8. Garnish with coriander leaves on the top.

Edit: I usually add tomato ketchup with it for better taste.

If you are preparing it, please share pic along with your experience.

Enjoy your Poha and Thank me later ?

Hello @PalashTheExplorer ,

Thank you for sharing this photo and recipe with us, the Poha looks really delicious! Did you make it on your own? What is Chana Dal?

I’m a huge fan of Indian food in general and among my favorite meals are Chicken Curry and Chicken Korma.

While reading the ingredients for preparing the Poha, I came across several ones which are not that easy to find in Bulgaria, the place where I live.

Thanks @BorrisS for stopping by. I really appreciate it.
No, even though I know how to make, my mom makes way better and it was made by her with love.
Sorry for missing out info. Chana dal is baby chickpea or split chickpea(usually feeded to horses too), you can get translation from a simple google search(updated in post too).
As you love chicken dishes, my recommendation- try “Butter Chicken”

Yes, it will be a problem finding ingredients as this platform is full of people all over world. Please let me know which ingredient you are getting problem with and I may suggest some alternative(by consulting with mom too)
PS: ingredients not written in bold can be easily left out(like chana dal)

Again thanks a lot for liking the recipe and trying it. Made my day :man_dancing: :man_dancing:
