Auroville was founded as a project of Sri Aurobindo Society on Wednesday, February 28, 1968 by “Mother” Mira Alphassa. He was a spiritual equalizer of Sri Arvind Ghosh , who believed that “man is a transitional organism”. Mother expected that this experimental “global city would make significant contributions to the development of humanity towards a glorious future by uniting people of goodwill and a better world”. Mother also believed that such a global city would contribute significantly to the Indian Renaissance (References Mother’s Agenda , Vol.9, dated -3.02.68). Government of India supported this city and in 1966 UNESCOAlso endorsed it by calling upon member countries to contribute to the development of Auroville. In the last 40 years, UNESCO has supported Auroville four times more.
In the inaugural ceremony held on 28 February 1968, in which representatives of 124 nations took part, the mother gave her four-point manifesto to Auroville setting up her integrated life philosophy
