Auckland Nightscape - Sky City and Viaduct Harbour

Auckland is New Zealand’s largest city with a population of 1.6 million. The Maori name for Auckland is Tamaki.

It’s also nicknamed the City of Sails with one the highest ownership rate of yacht per thousand people in the world.

This is the view from the Sky City, the tallest building in the Southern Hemisphere. This observatory is about 235m high. Sky City is one of the most popular entertainment/dining spot for tourists as well as for locals. It has two hotels

12 restaurants, a casino and a conference centre. You can see the Harbour Bridge in this photo. It now has been equipped with LED lights. A light show is displayed for a special occasion attracting a lot of residents to see. It also has a bungy jump station.

Viaduct Harbour is a hub for some unique experience: Local and international cuisines with formal and casual dining., The Maritime Museum, Harbour cruise, Silo Park etc. It hosts a variety of events and activities all through the year. The luxury yachts from all over the world are parked here. This is the base for all the teams competing for the American’s Cup 2020. In the past, the Viaduct Harbour has two America’s Cup regatta (2000 and 2003).

PS: these two photos were taken on the New Year’s Eve of 2020. Hundreds of people were on site. We were so looking forward to the New Year…and the rest is history.

Take care and keep safe my fellow Local Guides. Hello from Down Under!

Thanks for your post @OliverKIWI . The photos are very nice.

Did you know that more people live in Auckland than the entire South Island? Yes there are more registered boat owners in NZ per capita than anywhere else in the world. Not surprised as it is so nice to get out on the water.

The night is pretty with all the lights on. The streets were full of people to celebrate the new year…
