In Bhutan, there are 20 districts and every district has a large fortress called Dzong. Currently, all Dzongs serve as religious and administrative centers of that particular district.
This is the Fortress of Punakha district in western Bhutan. It is very popular starting from its history, its sacredness, its location, its design, and so on.
It was the first capital of Bhutan before moving to Thimphu. Thimphu is currently the capital city of Bhutan.
Inside this fortress, lots of historic and momentous events took place in the past as well as it is still going on at present. It is also a fortress where some of the most sacred relics of Bhutan are currently stored.
It is built on the confluence of two rivers i.e. Mo Chhu and Pho Chhu. They join together to form Punatsangchhu.
If you want to witness the rich Bhutanese traditional architecture, then this fortress is one of the ultimate answers for you. Entry to the fortress is open to public daily. This fortress is a must visit if you come to Bhutan.
During this trip, I didn’t visit inside the fortress so I don’t have any photos taken inside the fortress. I will try to update in days come.
