The Punakha suspension bridge is the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in Bhutan. Punakha is one of the districts in western Bhutan which is about 70 km away from the capital city. Most sources say that the length of the bridge is about 160 meters and I’m yet to find the official data.
It is frequented by both locals and tourists to experience its real length and enjoy the scenic view. The location of the bridge is about 5 minutes walk from the nearest road. It is suspended between two valleys in Punakha flying over the Pho Chhu(Pho=male and Chhu=river). Pho Chhu is a tributary of Punatsang Chhu, which is one of the major rivers in Bhutan.
The bridge is beautified by colorful prayer flags hanging from the bridge and draped along the cables of its entire length. While walking, we could see the flow of the river below our feet through the spaces between metallic bars of the bridge.
During my visit, it was windy where I could feel the swinging of the bridge, but it was not very scary. Walking through the bridge was fun and adventurous.
There is a shop at the endpoint of the bridge where we can rest and enjoy snacks and refreshments.
