Hello! Guys,
I’m a LG from Bhutan and in this series of “Attractions in Bhutan”, I will try my best to share most of the travel destinations in Bhutan that I’ve visited so far. I hope that you all will enjoy it. If you all want to ask anything related to my country, feel free to do so and I will try to reply as soon as possible.
I would like to share this travel destination in my first episode because this temple is the most beautiful and sacred temple in Bhutan. It is often said that journey to Bhutan is incomplete without the hike to Tiger’s Nest.
It is located in Paro district. The base of the hike is about one and half hours drive from the capital city. Bhutan has 20 districts and Thimphu is the capital city.
It was first built in 1692. It was destroyed by several natural calamities and was rebuilt. History says that Guru Rinpoche flew to this place on the back of Tigress where he meditated in the cave subduing evil demons within this area. Hence the name Tiger’s Nest. In the Buddhist context, Guru Rinpoche is the second Buddha. We Bhutanese usually call this temple as Paro Taktsang(Paro=name of the district, Tak=Tiger and Tsang=nest)
It is built on a very steep rocky cliff which gives a scenic view. It is incessantly frequented by tourists and locals throughout the year. The hike is about 2 hours.
Any recording devices are not allowed inside the temple. There are 8 temples, a butter lamp room, and three caves. Two of the caves are restricted for public entry.
If you happen to visit this temple in the future I would like to make some recommendations. To ease your hike experience, go early in the morning, wear light comfortable shoes and pants, carry an umbrella & walking stick and a small bottle of water.
Time of my travel: December 2016 and July 2018.
I have also filmed my hike to Tiger’s nest so if you are interested, do check it here:
