Associate Press Style in POI Name

Hello,

Shouldn’t we write the name of a POI on Google Maps in Associate Press Style format?

Here are some examples:

Suppose the name of the POI is Coffee House. Now it can be written in the following formats:

  1. Coffee House

  2. COFFEE HOUSE ×

  3. coffee house ×

  4. COFFEE House ×

  5. coffee House ×

  6. CoffEe HouSe ×

…etc. But as you can see among all these the name format of #1 is the appropriate and I believe all the names of the POIs on Google Maps should be written using this format.

Here how to write in AP Style format: https://capitalizemytitle.com/style/AP/

What do you think?

@DibyayanC Currently there’s no explicit rule for that. And I would agree #1 would be the best format. Although there might be exceptions where some business intentionally use stylized format for their name, which makes more sense to not necessarily follow #1.

In any case, that’s why we have the ability to submit name change suggestions. We can help correct the names if it doesn’t look right.

Edit: apparently I’m wrong about ‘no explicit rule’. Ignore what I said above, please take a look at Morten’s reply below.

Hi @DibyayanC

Great post.

Using only ALL CAPS is clearly against the guidelines issued by the Google Business Profile program. If you want to check the relevant guidelines, please click here. Basically, All Caps can only be used if the name is a shorthand and is no longer than 4 letters.

Exactly. If the owner of a POI represents the name of his business in a stylish format which doesn’t follow AP Style, that could be an exception.

But for a regular POI, I think we should follow the AP Style.

Thank you for sharing the guidelines and appreciating my post.

Hi @DibyayanC

I just published this tip for correcting misuse of ALL CAPS: https://www.localguidesconnect.com/t5/General-Discussion/LGCTM-Tips-amp-Tricks-Fixing-ALL-CAPS-names-quicker/td-p/3631983

I started working on the post prior to reading your post

Good work Morten :+1:

Thanks for all your appreciations

Last month I edited more than a thousand POI names on Google Maps to this AP Style format for my #LGCTM project.

The result was pathetic. My LG account was banned. My appeal was rejected twice. Then finally my LG account got restored after sharing the details via mail to Local Guide support.

But, after effects are still happening. My edit suggestions are getting rejected instantly.

So, from my side I am pausing my #LGCTM project for a while until Google activate my editing feature (or power).

Sorry to hear that.

I think it is possible to build the trust score slowly by focussing on edits that get approved quickly. And then still the overall approval rate fluctuate in waves over months. I was never able to find the reasons for these fluctuations. Maybe they are caused by adjustments to the spam filter on Google’s side.

I can not explain what you are experiencing. It sounds like you know pretty well how to act.

Cheers

Yes, spam filter is the issue here.

I think I am still banned by Google Map from performing any edits on Maps. That’s why every edits that I am making these days are getting rejected instantly.
