Asdrúbal, general cartaginés, sobre la antigua población ibérica de Mastia, fundó la importante ciudad de Qart Hadasht, convertida por los cartagineses en base naval, que los romanos llamarían posteriormente Carthago Nova, la actual ciudad mediterránea de Cartagena. Fortifica la ciudad y construyó en ella uno de los mejores palacios de aquella época, de la que no queda ninguno de sus restos.
