#arosefortheplanet, Snowdrops in the Beginning of February, Minsk, Belarus

This post is the answer for A Rose for the Planet - a new Local Guides campaign. initiated by @ErmesT .

Not long ago I have written about the winter in Belarus. You could see snow caps on trees in my post, snowy forest, and frozen windows, making a snowman and sledding. I described with full confidence the cold temperatures, I wrote: «Usually winter is not very cold, usual temperatures are from 0°C to - 10°C, but the frost -30-40°C is also possible, children usually have additional vacations in such weather. But when the weather is above zero (it’s not rare), all this snow is melting turning into durty porrige underfoot».

And I was sure that it’s so. It was as obvious as the fact that white is white and black is black. The winter should be cold in Belarus.

Now I’m not so sure.

Look please at these photos:

All these photos are taken in the period 11.01.2020-02.02.2020. Can you tell for sure that you see namely winter photos?

More photos you can see by the link: https://photos.app.goo.gl/eJD5Hkh5EjAMTYt86. (be sure to look at the links in comments - they are in Russian, but you can easily translate the text).

Snowdrops and green grass in January-February for Belarus is an incredible situation. This cannot be, because it can never be. And this is not about a few days. Sleds, skis are unused since the beginning of winter. The single day when we could ride, we missed. Even in November, it is usually colder than this winter (with the exception of a few days that are suitable for November).

Of course I couldn’t catch all the signs. In internet you can find even the photos of butterflies, blooming daisies, rhododendrons and magnolias, can read about the bears and hedgehogs which can’t sleep; cockchafers woke up, wood grouse and deer started mating ahead of time.

January, 22 was with a thunderstorm, and February, 2 was with a rainbow.

Rapeseed is abundantly green on agricultural fields. The cultures woke up from hibernation. Usually such a picture can be observed no earlier than March. Experts call this situation extreme. Plants can die.

This year, for the first time in the history of meteorological observations, climatic winter did not come to Belarus till the end of January and the weather corresponded to the first or second decade of November. That is, the transition through zero did not happen.

You can say it’s impossible, it can never happen. But it seems we deal with our new reality. Climate has changed.

Addition (March,2020):

Now calendar winter is over and one can say that this winter is the only winter which has not come at all.

Climatic winter in Belarus is a period when the average daily temperature steadily drop below 0 degrees Celcium. Usually it begins in November-December and ends in February-beginning of March. This year it didn’t happen. February in Belarussian is called “Люты” what means “evil”, “harsh”, but this year Femruary resembled March if not April. It wasn’t evil month at all.

My indoor flowers spent the winter at the balcony and feel fine (it’s closed, but when the temperature outside is -30 degrees, temperature at my balcony may be -10 degrees). I wore my autumn shoes almost all winter (it would never had occured to me before). My son’s sleigh stood untouched during all winter. He didn’t had time to ride them at those single day when the snow was appropriate.

Excellent post. Warm winter. Russia also has a warm winter this year. But we have a sub-zero temperature now from -3 to -10. @ErmesT made a post on the topic of climate change. I think it’s important.

Thanks. Your photos are beautiful! I have a photo of green grass in the snow. I think it is suitable for this post.

@OlgaKlimchik I can see the difference in this post, also I agree that climate has changed. In Thailand, it’s hot, hot and hot, so it’s not clear about climate change. But one thing we notice, the seasons have shifted from what they were in the past.

Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

Thank you for your answer. To tell you a truth I didn’t think a lot about the changing of climate before this winter.

Previous winters were warmer a bit. Seasons had shifted in time. Each season began later and ended later for about the month. Some summer was warm and the other was cold. The same were the winters. One winter there were a lot of snow and other was almost without snow. It was normal, as the temperatures didn’t differ much from the average. If some changes were clear for specialists, they weren’t such inarguable for me.

But now the difference is clear enough. And it’s shocking!

I absolutely agree with you @OlgaKlimchik , that the climate has become completely different. Winter will soon become something that is told in fairy tales. Perhaps this is very dangerous for humanity. But people somehow survived the ice age and other climate changes. And I also noticed that there was a certain shift of the seasons. Your photos are great. Have you used a professional camera?

@katydarhel Yes, Kate, it’s professional camera, but unfortunately it hasn’t professional hands in complect :slightly_smiling_face:

Some of the photos are made by my phone.

Do not be so shy @OlgaKlimchik . These photos are simply gorgeous. And I especially like these snowdrops as a cover.

Hello @OlgaKlimchik

I clearly agree with what you see. At best, these images show these changes of nature. I want you to know these illustrations, which were made in the same place. Thank you in advance!

Thank you very much @OlgaKlimchik , @katydarhel , @user_not_found , for being the witness of this.

This is absolutely scaring and dangerous: if, when the plants begin to sprout, the temperature drops down deeply, this will damage the shoots.

This is a deep risk for the agriculture.

@Ant_Bad_Yogi , @Nyainurjanah , I will try to explain this in a simple way, even if it is not very simple.

Our Planet receive energy from the sun. One part of the energy is reflected by the atmosphere, one part is reflected by the ice surface on the poles and on the glaciers. Another part is irradiated to the space by the planet itself. This (to keep the temperature in balance and constant) prevent us to burn.

In the last century, we (the humans) started to inject more energy on the planet. The result is a variation of the atmosphere, and the reduction (melting) of the ice in the poles. These two changes have the effect to reduce the reflection of the energy that the planet receive, increasing the accumulation of energy, with more melting on the glaciers. What I mean is that the process is exponential (faster and faster every year) and the “non return” point is now very close.

Dinosaurs didn’t survived to the Ice Age, @katydarhel , and in this case we are the dinosaurs. The planet will survive for sure. With or without us, this is something that the mankind must decide in a very short time.

The result of taking a decision will totally change our life, in one way or another

Hi @ErmesT !!!
Well, what solution do you see?

Really nice post @OlgaKlimchik ! There is a hidden Beauty in your Pictures! Wow!

It is good that you shared the Link.

Please anyway think about that max 1000 pictures are permitted on Localguidesconnect. Maybe use more collages as you did.

Best regards

I wrote a lot about the possible solution @katydarhel .

We need to change our lifestyle, reducing the use of energy, optimizing the resources, reducing the emissions dramatically in the next 10 years.

Even doing this, the inertial energy of the planet will act for 20 more years, with more climate variations, stronger storms, a big desertification, starting to revers slowly on 2050.

I will be 90 on 2050, but my dream is to be here to see the change of directions of the slope. I do not want to scare you, @katydarhel , but maybe scaring people is something that we must do, to stimulate a reaction.

We need you, the planet need you @katydarhel

We need young minds like yours, able to imagine a different future, a different use of the energy, a different life. Able to put their soul in this, able to put your love for the life in this. Able to imagine and to paint a different way to stay.

I have called this “the Sixth R - Re-design the future

@WebSourceC1 Thank you for your answer, but unfortunately I can’t catch the meaning of your question. Could you paraphrase it, please.

If you mean the place the photos were made, all photos were made near my house, not far from each other.

@ErmesT This year the weather really impressed me. I can’t remember any such year. The last year the winter was warm, but it was usual winter. And as far as I can see such changes are all over the world. I’m afraid to think about the next year. The measures must be taken, and taken as soon as possible. Unfortunately I can’t make a lot. I hope these photos will influence the opinion of somebody, who has power to do something really significant and to make decisions withing countries.

@TorM Thank you for your adoring and for your advice. I remember about the limit and will delete some photos later. I will leave the link, all photos are there. I think it’s easier to look the photos rightly in the post, and it’s not always easy to make collages.

@ErmesT I’m not completely understand this. But I’m trying to reduce the use of Air Conditioner in my house. :slightly_smiling_face:

Hi @OlgaKlimchik ,

It’s the same time an incredible post but also it’s sad that our climate changed so much.

I think that in the whole world there is already something strange with climate and I hope that one day the normal climate will come back and our children will live in a better condition than us.

However, you photos are really very nice. Thanks a lot for the nice post!

Hey @OlgaKlimchik ,

Thanks for the great post and for taking part in the initiative started by @ermest to mention about the climate changes around the world. That’s indeed something I noticed in Bulgaria, too.

Here is one of my photos of snowdrops captured a week ago:
