Are Malls a Past Pastime?

I recently visited Richmond Town Square, a shopping mall located 15 miles east of Downtown Cleveland, in Richmond Heights, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland. Opened in 1966 as Richmond Mall, this mall is far from what it used to be and is considered a “dead mall”. According to deadmalls.com, Richmond Mall is one of 31 dead malls in Ohio. Are malls a pastime of the past? Management of the mall, the Washington Prime Group, would beg to differ. Signs are posted throughout the mall assuring the public that this mall won’t be the next Ohio mall to close its doors. If you are ever in the Cleveland area, visit this mall for yourself and you decide. Feel free to post anymore information you have about this mall and othes like it in the comments section.

I recently visited Richmond Town Square Mall in Richmond Heights, Ohio, a mall that I frequented as a child. However, it looked nothing like it used to. Though management continues to profess the mall is not closing, visuals appear otherwise. Major retail chains are scarce, with the removal of Victoria’s Secret, Macy’s, and Bath and Body Works, in recent years. The most popular chain that remains is Foot Locker. Walking around this mall, it’s sad to see what has become, however, it’s nothing new in Ohio. According to deadmalls.com, there are approximately 31 “dead malls” in Ohio.

The food court at Richmond Town Square only has two restaurants in operation, Asian Chao and Charley’s Subs. Not many people pack the food court on a Saturday afternoon as they used to.

An advertisement for Planet Fitness, which is located in the mall, is the most active part of this establishment.

Empty walkways are the primary sight of this mall amongst the few shops and kiosks that remain.

A department store and escalators no longer in operation.

One of three walkways with a little bit more activity than the others, but…still very empty for a mall.
