Architecture - How to keep it interesting

A building , is a building is a building , or is it ?

Everyday we see buildings , when we go into the city , or even town , we see building s, small and tall ones . Sometimes we see the odd photo here and there . But let me try and help you look for the most interesting and awesome ways to take Architectural photos.

Architecture can be boring . , so its up to you to make it look awesome.

You don’t have to take a photo of the whole building .
That’s right , we don’t have to see the whole building to know its a building ,so select a small part of the building. Something that catches your eye. I always question myself. I see an open window on a building , then I ask myself , why is it interesting ?, why did it catch my eye ? Was it because I don’t often see open windows on tall buildings in the city ? Is it because the curtains are blowing out of the window ?
Now I have to think , most times I am at street level , how do i get an interesting picture of that open window?

A small unusual point of interest can change the whole feel of a photo.
An open window always gives a sense of mystery and voyeuristic nautiness. You eye is immediately drawn to that open window , you know its not very polite to look in the window but you can help it. Its definitely a subconscious thing . A friend pointed out to me , that 3 out of every 5 of my Glass Cladded Tall buildings all had a window open. I went back and looked at my facebook posts over 10 years and I was shocked. There was an open window here , one there . And I didnt even realize i was doing it.

Look for that Unique view.
Sometimes I take a photo of a building , the standard boring , everyone has done it photo. I will then find a shady spot nearby , and then look at the photo and think. Now how can I make this boring building look like its from another planet? Lighting. - Yes , most Definitely - Some of the best times to take beautiful photos of buildings are in the very early hours of the morning, As the light starts to force the night skies to the other side of the planet. The Street lights , and buildings lights are ussal still on , The sky starts to Brighten , and there is this special time , some call it the Golden Hour , I call it “OMYGOSHLOOKATTHELIGHT”. The buildings take on a soft glow , windows reflect pink skies… But even MID day with the hard blue skies , and strong shadows. You can still make building stand out. Think Powerful , Majestic. And dont forget my favorite , what you call Bad weather , I call brilliant photos coming up. Fog , Mist , Smog , Rain , snow , they all create some wonderful and very interesting lighting conditions around buildings.

The Human Element
I constantly look at the buildings around me for people. On the buildings , looking out windows , on the streets looking up at buildings. We relate to people so much easier , when we see a photo of people , we can relate , so we immediately feel a sort of kinship. The other interesting thing that people in Architectural Photos does is give the viewer an instant reference to the size of things around those people. We can judge immediately how tall the building is , How large nearby windows are ect. People also give a great sense of surprise. In the photo above , most people quickly look over the photo , and only when they notice the people right in the centre do they stop and go . Ohh Cool. So be quick to spot people on buildings , as as quick as you see them , they are gone

Make the Ugly Beautiful

To make an ugly fly over , grey and dirty look fresh and unique and even quirky , just takes a little bit of maneuvering. If i spot something interesting , I can often be seen walking forwards and backwards , I look up , I bend over , I go to the other side of the road , I look again , I twist and turn , I look in the reflection of Other buildings windows , Puddles , windscreens. I want Unique , fun and interesting . So Use your imagination …

I have a small pray that I always say when I head into the city. Its not really a pray , But It goes like this.

Thank you beautiful city , keep me safe , warn me of danger
Thank you growing and evolving city , allow me to see your hidden side.
Thank you stunning protective buildings , let me show the world a side of you that not many will have seen
Thank you for all the interesting and wonderful scenes you will be showing me
And let me be quick enough and alert enough to capture your sly sense of humor.

Thank you city.

I always find it amazing how there is one creature that I always encounter on my Street Photography sessions and that is cats. They have this amazing ability to always make a photo take on a whole new meaning… I always look out for cats when I do my walk arounds , What these street cats must have seen , and the secrets that they know…

I always scan all the buildings around me , scenes like these don’t happen often. I remember when i took this photo , I knew I had seen it ( This Scene ) somewhere before… There was an old Street photo i saw many years ago , simular . Some how I keep thinking Salvador dali. Anyways , I remember the image of a womans legs sticking out the top balcony window… I wonder if anyone else has ever seen it ?

This is one of my favorite selfies . I wanted to show the chaotic and unbalanced feeling that the streets can sometimes emanate. But in all the madness , I am still there , looking , waiting , feeling …

Eric , Please show me some more of your different architectural ones , that goes for everyone…

I am living in a small medieval town, @Mongoose , 20 Km to Venice, and I spent all my spare time of the last two years traveling to the earthquake area in Central Italy, to help the people in there to restart. In Treviso, where I live, we call “the skyscraper” the tallest building of the town, even if it have only 20 floors.

The architecture in my area is composed of red bricks, frescos on ancient walls, walled cities.

While in central Italy is a blend of bricks and rocks, red and grey, all together.

As I said in other post, I am not a photographer, I am a story teller, that use the photos to support my stories.

Most of the tourists are not aware of this part of Venice (well, they shouldn’t), in a sequence of coloured blocks, cutted by blades of light: I have a “neutral” version too, but the echological operator in there help to highlight how incredibly cleaned the road are

This is the oldest part of Treviso, you can see the road, paved with stones

I don’t like to share too many photos of the ruins of the eartquake. But some of them is a symbol.

All the meaning of the message is not on the damaged bell-tower, but on the unnatural position of the bell

And you poor guys in Venice have had a terrible time with flooding. Hey , Thank you for helping , sometimes people forget to thank you for all the help and work that they dont notice , so I will thank you on their behalf.

I don’t know what I am anymore . A Photographer , I dunno , a documentor ? not really. And Artist , I dont know.
I started writing about 3 years ago , and sometimes i weave the words around the photos.

I will keep the theme as Architecture , and I hope that you might take something from this…

" I look above and see a flicker of clouds in a cobalt blue sky. It reminds me of the ocean, been afloat on an endless expanse of memories. Some memories orderly, but one dark memory like a tumor in this brilliant blue. It seems to stick out, like some accusing finger , it wants to be known , it wants attention. No amount of ignoring it can make it go away, I might have to blend it with some other thoughts and memories, mix it and dilute it with memories of happier times and maybe the composition of my mind will finally become balanced and peace can come flooding in."

Cold folds like burning paper, looking like a strange braille to the Gods above.

I am always fascinated and very aware how we as humans shape of cities , just tiny bits here and there . Look at dog walkers , one might think that they are walking the dogs because they as well as the animals need exercise… But these people are changing our cities . They are like crime prevention , they see things happen , and as much as they will not admit it , they are like roving , watching , seeing , police men and woman , and the poor animals are just dragged along for the ride. People who walk their dogs in the city , they know who belongs where , and who isnt part of the local neighborhood .

“A few steps away, a mature woman walks on with two elderly dogs in tow. My mind searches for a story, I can picture her at the kitchen table talking to the dogs like she used to talk to her husband. Her love divided, her voice commanding and slightly off key. She tells the dogs about her day, and they just look on, telepathically the dogs communicate with each other, “ So when is she going to feed us? , why do we always have to listen to her for hours before we get our food?”… the other dog replies “ It’s because of our Karma , our sins from our last life , we never listened , so now we have to “… and on and on she went , her voice rising and falling like the ever ending tides.”

Hey @Mongoose ,

Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.

Taking photos of buildings is an opportunity, especially if you want to show a participial part of it.

By the way I’ve relabeled your post. It now appears under Photography topic section, because it is more suitable to it.

One of the things i always try my best to do , is look for the beauty in the neglected , or ugly boring over looking buildings. Sometimes I know there is way to make a spectacular photo but i cant see it , so I mentally mark the spot , and come back another day at another time under different weather conditions …

I sometimes go and do a street photography session , and don’t take any photos . I have a process of covering as much area of the city and will always go and visit favorite spots , and I always try and find at least one interesting spot every session.
