Archaelogical site, historical monuments and museums around Pune and Maharashtra

I love to visit Archaeological site, historical monuments (e.g. forts, palaces) and museums mostly in and around Pune, and whenever possible across India. I like to learn about the history behind all the archaeological site, forts and palaces. Whenever I travel, I make plan in advance to visit local monuments and learn about local history. Generally I add the information on google maps regarding access routes to these sites and any special care to be taken while you are planing visit to such sites. Following first two pictures are from Mahabalipuram, a beachside tourist site which is near to Chennai (Tamilnadu state, India) at about 1hrs drive and is mostly visited site in South India. It is declared as UNESCO world heritage site.

Last picture is Lighthouse at Mahabalipuram. The first light was commissioned here in 1887. The lighthouse with a circular masonry tower made of natural stone became fully functional in 1904. India’s oldest lighthouse, built around 640 AD by Pallava king stands next to this modern structure. The Pallava era lighthouse is a protected monument, maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India.
