Annoying Animated GIFs

Caption: Oh no, not another photo slideshow in the form of an animated GIF (LG: @AdamGT )

I’ve noticed more and more animated GIFs being used on Connect and just want to say that while I do understand that because of the 1000 photo limit, more and more LGs are using these to show a slideshow of multiple photos. For me, GIFs are ok when there is one basic background image in the GIF and you’re showing some animation against that background image like in this example. However, in the case of a slideshow of different photos, as well as being a distraction, if the animation is too fast then it’s a major irritation and doesn’t give me, and I’m sure others, enough time to really appreciate your great photos! So if you are going to use animated GIFs for a slideshow then why not look at controlling the speed for the whole GIF by setting an overall delay time or adjust the delay for specific photos in your slideshow. If the program or tool that you are using doesn’t have this capability then I know that there are some out there like the GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) and ezgif that can. Of coure, alternatively, you could look at other techniques to help you avoid the 1000 Connect photo limit. Thanks for listening to my plea!

ps: Because at the moment inserting images from the photo library isn’t working, to help avoid adding to the count towards the 1000 photo limit, I tend to use and re-use where appropriate, one of my general images, in this instance, a photo of an unhappy or puzzled looking pussy cat, who’s name by the way is Chita!

Thank you @AdamGT for this post. I have the same problem with these GIFs they tend to annoy me for not being able to see the pictures as most of the animations are too fast. Hope your great tips and links will help others (they sure were helpful to me).

This little kitten says No to animations :joy_cat:

Hi @Erik_van_den_Ham

Yes they certainly are annoying and I’m sure annoy many others. To my mind, they just don’t do justice to the poster’s post and photos.

I’m sure they do @AdamGT I do hope the update of my reply above isn’t too annoying!

Lol too funny @Erik_van_den_Ham ! That GIF is fine because it’s not a series (slide-show) of different high-speed flashing photos!

As in your example, I’ve added an link to what I consider to be a reasonable animated GIF in the post @Erik_van_den_Ham and on another note, we have to be careful because I can just see that this post will end up with lots of photos of pussy cats. I’m almost certain that @ErmesT will oblige.

Sorry that they don’t work in your country @helga19 but I do hope you agree with the message in the post and if so, I’m sure that you can find a program that will work in your country!

High speed animated GIFs are an eyesore @AdamGT

Google Chrome does not offer any setting to freeze the animation. I understand, Firefox allows that.

Nevertheless, there are some browser extension which allow control of the GIF animation.

Are we talking about cats, @AdamGT , @Erik_van_den_Ham ? Or about animated GIFs?

I feel guilty in both cases, because I am a cat lover, and because I have been one of the first to use animated GIFs (with a decent frame rate) on my Cover Photo. When I realized that I was creating emulation, I stopped to do that, because some of them are just impossible to watch.

@StephenAbraham wrote, times ago, an idea to Reduce, slow-down or disable animated gifs in Local Guides Connect Home .

I am supporting the idea, because the abuse of them, and the crazy speed of many, can be dangerous for some people, as clearly explained by Stephen

Yes GIFs @ErmesT but I mentioned my concern that this post could easily turn into a post about cats lol. So now getting back to GIFs, I’m glad that you agree, they are being abused, are annoying and dangerous. I hate them and also hate seeing the quality of great posts and photos like @helga19 's killed by the bad use of GIFs. I have been meaning to post about this for some time now as I’ve noticed more being used as slideshows but I was almost having an epileptic fit on this last one so felt it was time to speak up. Thank you for the heads up on @StephenAbraham’s post which I hadn’t seen before and have now upvoted.

I feel the need to bring this post back up again @AdamGT . Currently there are some pretty annoying posts again with flashy GIF’s. One is even trending so it’s bothering me for days now.

Yes I’ve noticed this also but not sure how to raise this issue or give it more priority. I wonder if @ErmesT or @MortenCopenhagen might have any ideas on this! What I also find strange is that some who have upvoted this post have continued to use such annoying animated GIFs !!!

I see only two solutions:

A: Convince the team to make it not possible to use animated GIFs on Connect.

B: Use a browser or extension that allow you to freeze animated GIFs.

Trying to police fellow local guides behavior because a few find it estheticly unpleasing will never fly in my opinion.

Cheers

Hi @AdamGT

I agree with @MortenCopenhagen about finding a solution. I was just looking for an animation blocker for Chrome. I will test it later.

I am not surprised about being voted about people who don’t read the posts. I wrote a post about that long time ago, thinking about some local guides (yes, the same not mentioned by you).

I completely agree with you @AdamGT regarding the GIF. Most of the time localguides do not test the GIF themselves before posting here because making a gif within 3MB of size gives a lot of hassle. And, quality is also not good. And many of them do not know how to increase the duration of time from one image to another. Most of the time they use the default setting that gives pain to all of us. Though I use a GIF in some of my posts but I prefer the video GIF. Thanks for sharing this nice topic.

Thanks @MortenCopenhagen for your wisdom. I wonder if there is a third, compromise solution as not all animated GIFs are problematic. For example, because of reasonable frame rates, the GIFs in the Mobile Macro Photography post by @AmbrishVarshney and the Fireworks at Niagara post by @LaloPadilla are fine with me, and so is my example mentioned in the opening post here. So is it possible to stipulate a threshold frame rate? This might be difficult to enforce!

Totally agree with you @ErmesT , giving kudos without reading a post is just nonsensical and this was the whole purpose of my post, How to improve your Likes on Connect. Yet, even in that post I noted that some who gave kudos to the post continued after it, not to practice what they agreed with!

Yes @MukulR you are absolutely correct, no testing and no careful selection of frame rate.
