announcing that it's time to take the 36 plunge - most worldwide photowalks on March 23rd

G’Day Local Guides, I use Google Maps just about every day and rely on your reviews and photos to help me find the good stuff. Local Guides is something I care about quite deeply and to go with that I care about the quality of the photos that we put on Maps. This is why a few years ago I started a bit of a movement towards better quality through the concept of the 36 walk. It is time to announce this year’s walks and the people who are leading them

There are 25 walks this year across 14 countries. You can find a walk near you on the 36 Walk My Map for 2019, if there isn’t one there is no reason you can’t do your own 36 with just you or perhaps a few friends. There’s nothing to it but to enjoy a nice day out challenging yourself to make the best images you can but only 36 of course!!

So what do you do? Photography has become too easy. Most of us have a camera in our pocket and we’ve lost the need to care because making an image costs us nothing.

By constraining ourselves we must take more care with every image because it has to count. This leads to Consider. Compose. Click.

Why 36? In its heyday the most popular film came in 36 shot canisters. Each shot cost real money to develop. There was constraint. For most people this meant quality.

Each year, the 36 walk has grown because Local Guides care about quality and care about their contributions to Maps.

join the mission: join a walk, or go solo

Attendee packs are available in English, Dutch, French, Hindi, Italian, Russian, Spanish, Urdu and now Ukranian thanks to my wonderful translators (see credits below).

Let’s do this thing together and have a great day out. I look forward to recaps from the walk leaders and images from the participants.

ps. in case you hadn’t guessed this is also my Connect Live Post :).

Two more 36 Walks in Bangladesh - better late than never guys :). The Meetups are not yet approved so the start points and times are in this post and I’ll edit after they get approved.

Both of these walks are being mentored by the experienced LG Shafiul Bashar @ShafiulB

Good luck with your walks.

@PaulPavlinovich Thanks for your recent update about our two 36 Walks in Bangladesh. Hope sooner these Meet Up will approve & something special will be reflected on these photo walks.

If you don’t mind, please make some changes for better informed to our nearby guides.

Like as -

  • Bangladesh - Nilgiri View Point > Bangladesh - Bandarban (as a district name, Nilgiri is a tourist spot where the event will start)
  • Bangladesh - Teota Zamidar Bari > Bangladesh - Manikganj (as a district name, Teota Zamidar Bari is a tourist spot where the event will start)

Likewise France - Paris

Hi @PaulPavlinovich

It is a great initiative. 36 only pictures?

That is very hard for me, as I took lot of pictures for Google Maps.

I hope I could be the part of 36 one day.

Good luck to every one who has photowalk today!

I couldn’t recieve clear information about this walk in Karachi. I knew only after it was over. I even couldn’t see this post on Connect. Strange…

I only saw this after the walks @ShafiulB thanks for covering these - I’ll use the proper names in the global recap once all the other recaps are in.

Thanks @IshantHP_ig apart from helping out here on Connect the 36walk is something I enjoy organising. I simplified the process this year which made it much easier for me to get everyone together.

@Ddimitra you can run a 36walk any time you like during the year. Get a few friends together and have a go. 36 is an arbitrary number, the important thing is that you set a limit and try to stick to that limit.

Hello Paul. I’m new to this. Wondering if I can still organise a 36 Walk for in a couple of weeks where I am.
