Ancient Hammam, Near vardhman park, Upper lake area, Bhopal MP India.
While Bhopal city is famous for its heritage and lakes, it is known for its mixed culture and special civilization. At the time of the Gond rulers, it was not so famous as it gained glory after the establishment of the Nawabi rule, and diverse society and culture was born.
Today I wish to introduce to the community regarding one such ancient place of interest which is famous among the people of Bhopal as well as tourists. This attraction is a Royal Community Bath or Hammam, Known as Qadimi Hammam. It’s in service since 3 centuries.
Situated on the bank of the Upper Lake near Vardhman Park. The bathing place with the provision of hot water was constructed during the reign of Gond rulers is known as Qadimi Hammam. During Nawabi era the management of Hammam was handed over to Hajjam Hammu Khalifa. He was a trusted servant of the Nawab, for the service of the Royal family and Royal guests. It remain open from Diwali to the Holi.
There has a room before the entrance door, which has a normal climate. Even during winter there is an other room having size of 12’×12’ which is high roofed. Room adjoining this room is hotter than normal and the room is full of moisture. There are 2 wall galleries along this room, which remain cool. The steam arising from the floor of the room, adjoining the galleries fill the human body with heat. A special feature of this Hammam’s steamed room is that of the two pools one has cold water and other hot. The floor of this room has a thick Copper plate fitted under, and a Iron plate under the hot pool. The roof of this room has a ventilation having thick glass and fresh air flows in through the channels of the room.
Below the room a furnace which provides sufficient heat by burning the firewood in the furnace and steamed room remain humid and hot while galleries remain cool.
Turkish bath and Moroccan bath are quite popular but this is just unique.
Hamam has many special benefits: Firstly, the skin of the body gets cleansed and the dead skin is separated from the body, due to which the newly glowing smooth skin is revealed. Massage improves blood circulation and keeps skin healthy.
Still it’s managed by the descendants of Hammu Khalifa. Interesting thing is that most of the locals are also not aware about the services of ancient and historical wellness center. Visit and enjoy once the Royal wellness treatment at this Hammam at quite affordable price.
