Ajanta and Ellora caves are quite popular among the travelers from all over the world and are located in Aurangabad, Maharashtra, India. Both the caves are 100 km away from each other. Ajanta Caves are 104 km from Aurangabad, while Ellora Caves are 29 km away from Aurangabad.
These hand-carved caves were built in the period between 2nd century BC and 6th century AD and are almost buried by thick forests all around. There are 29 caves at Ajanta and 34 at Ellora. The Ellora caves are divided into three parts – Hindu Caves, Jain Caves, and Buddhist Caves.
One of the most famous sites in the entire Ajanta and Ellora Caves is the Kailash Temple, which is also the single largest monolithic structure in the world; the temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva.
These rock-cut caves containing carvings are some of the best examples of ancient Indian architecture and sculpture. These caves were declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in the year 1983.
The best season to visit the caves is from November to March, when it’s cooler and dry. Also try to visit in weekdays, avoid visiting on weekends & public holidays.

Veeeeeeeeeeery beautiful @vijayparadkar !
It reminds me Angkor Wat in Cambodia, but this one looks too very popular by public.

This is just incredible @vijayparadkar , thanks for sharing!
Whenever I see such old structures with amazing attention to detail, it blows my mind. It’s so impressive how they were able to carve all of this by hand and with almost surgical precision. Even with our modern day technology it seems that this task would be an enormous challenge.
Thanks for all the great tips, they will be very helpful to people planning to visit.
Would you say that it’s possible to visit both Ajanta and Ellora on the same day?

@MortenSI Thank you for your appreciation. Truly, these caves are a work of wonder.
If you wish to visit both the caves in a day, it will be very rushed. As I have mentioned in the post, they are 100 kms apart from each other. To travel to Ajantha caves from Aurangabad, explore all caves their and return to Aurangabad you will need an entire day. So, it is better to plan an entire day for Ajantha and then you can set another day for Ellora caves, Dawalatabad Fort, Bibi-ka-Makbara, and other destinations in Aurangabad city.

Thanks for the great advice @vijayparadkar !
I think you’re right, trying to see it all in one day would be too rushed and wouldn’t leave much time to appreciate the sites.
Dawalatabad Fort and Bibi-ka-Makbara sound interesting too, it seems there is plenty to see and do around Aurangabad city.

@vijayparadkar In my bucket list of places to visit - thank you for the tips - especially the one where you said to take two days to visit both places. What about accommodation in both the places? And transport between the two places?

Hi @Indira_IllathuVala I would suggest you to stay at Aurangabad city, there are many hotels. Ellora caves are near to Aurangabad, so do give a visit to Daulatabad Fort & Ellora caves on one day. For Ajantha Caves you have to spend full day so take a Cab because it is 100 Km away from City.

Yeah @Indira_IllathuVala there are many attractions near city like Bibi Ka Maqbara, Daulatabad fort, Chhatrapati Shivaji maharaj museum etc. So it is better to stay in City.
