My travel this past weekend was official and pertaining to my Missionary activities. It took to me to a well known and popular destination not only in Africa, but in Nigeria itself. It’s one of those few Kingdom that existed even before the colonial masters arrived in Nigeria. As a result of It’s prowess and authority it stands still and even after independence, when the colonial masters were long gone.
The Ancient Benin Kingdom dates back centuries ago, located in the south west of Nigeria. It’s about 300km from Lagos the commercial capital of Nigeria. It’s very rich in culture and African heritage. I like the preservation of the different images even in the city itself. It’s ancestry is the same as the Yoruba tribe. The rich historical background of this Kingdom is not what can be exhausted in a little post here on connect.
The ruling king is an authority in the political affairs of the country.
It’s a bubbling city of about 1.7million inhabitants which made it the 4th largest city in the country. It’s a place you’ll love to visit. There are lots of archaeological and historical places of interest.
Funfacts about Benincity.
The oba and subjects of the kingdom dresses in lots of beads and in red colour
The current Oba of Benin is Oba Ewuare II. The 40th king of this Kingdom.
The Benin moat is one of the largest man made earth structures. It’s size is 20meters high and covers a distance of 16,000 kilometres.
It’s a bubbling and lively city.
Lots of hotels amd resorts centre to enjoy on your visit.
Thank you for sharing this beautiful photo with us, I would have never though that this picture is taken from the city center!
Personally, I enjoyed reading all the fact that you’ve mentioned in your post, very interesting and it made me wanna go there! Was this your first visit to this place?
Feel free to edit your post and add the Google Maps link of this area. By doing so, other Local Guides will visualize better where this statue is located.
First of all, you took a nice photo for this post, very clear and bright @SholaIB I love to read the information you added in this post. While I was reading this post I remember my reading of " Things Fall Apart" by Chinua Achebe though I do not know the reason for it. Anyway, thanks a lot for this nice post. Stay safe,
I love to read your comments because you are one of those on connect can tell me the exact truth about a post or picture. Thank you for the nice comment.
Yes Nigeria, like India and Bangladesh is full of rich cultural heritage. I have read things fall apart a good number of times and I have also been in that part Chinua Achebe wrote about. Someday I’ll write a post about that part if my travels take there.
I really enjoyed Benincity, I also went to the Museum while I was there, I plan to write a post on my visit to the museum later. Thank you again.
