An untold story of a cosy #Temple somewhere in #China

I know that my article is expected to be a travelling one and it is if you keep reading until the end. But to be able to explain why I decided to pick up this place as a topic of my next article and a highly recommended place for your next visit while you are in China, Shandong province, I have to start the story from the very beginning. However, the information about the location and other basic facts can be found just a couple of paragraphs below.

Now let me tell you what is the story behind my photos and the main idea of visiting this gorgeous, peaceful temple in a small town somewhere in China.

Travelling makes us notice the little things around us. And when we combine those little things together, they become more than important and can make a difference in the way we live, think, grow our beliefs and mind-set. In this modern world, where we have to worry about the financial side of our life every single day, it seems challenging to be a spiritual person. But if you are so, then just keep reading and you’ll find out more about the best destination for your next trip.

It is even more difficult to find places where you can fully express your spirituality; where you can think, pray, focus on your thoughts and just feel the dust of the magic. And from my perspective, for someone who is travelling, who has left the comfort zone to explore the world and who is challenging himself or herself every single day by trying new food, by hearing new language all the time, by meeting new people, by sleeping in a new bed every day it is even more crucial to stop somewhere from time to time, to think and analyse everything and just be a spiritual person for a moment. It happens to me often. You just lose yourself in the time when your mind is busy with planning a new trip, choosing a new destination, booking a new hotel, tickets. I feel like probably many travellers like me, may have experienced this need of peace and pause.

But the problem is that sometimes it is not easy to find that one place to rest your mind, because all places for worshiping have become more tourist attractions, a way to make money and a way to attract visitors. It is even a bigger problem in major cities where most of the tourists tend to visit, temples, churches, mosques or however the worshiping place may be called in different religions. You enter a temple and cannot even walk normally because it is always crowded there, full of people trying to get that one unique shot for the Instagram. I hope you get me right because I am not judging anyone now, but just sharing with you what I feel after a long time travelling. And if you are the one looking for what I could find in Yalushan temple, and that is peace, faith, pause, new ideas and spiritual connectivity, then just book your train or bus ticket to Jinan city in Shandong province, if you are in China.

The temple complex is situated in a small town called Laiwu (莱芜) in Shandong Province. It has totally 4 different sections. Each temple is in a higher level from the previous temple. So at the end of the complex you will also find nice view of the city. The name of the temple is Yalushan (雅鹿山) and the park where the temple is situated in Chinese is called “Ya lu shan gong yuan”. Getting there is not really hard, because Laiwu is a small city and taking a taxi is both convenient and cheap. From the city centre take taxing a taxi will cost only 15 yuan (2$). The drivers there don’t speak English, so just show the driver the name of the place in Chinese language. An alternative way is to take a bus number 22 to the park if you are in the newer part of the city called “Laiwu Tech Zone”. But again, the best way to get there is the taxi. There is no entrance fee to the temple complex. It is free for everyone. But if you want to light candles then it may cost around 60 yuan (8,5$). The whole complex itself Is worth to visit. Make sure you check out all sections because it is quite big. My only recommendation is to take your time there and enjoy the incredible beauty of the both nature and Chinese architecture.

Hello @Hasmik ,

That’s a really beautiful place to visit! Thanks for sharing your photos. The temple looks incredible and very colourful. I totally agree with you that travelling makes you richer. Do you visit this place often? I prefer to go to such places when the weather is nice and there are a couple of non-working days when you have the time to enjoy a lot of activities.

@MoniDi thank you for the comment. I’m happy you liked the post. And yes, I like to visit this temple. It’s my favorite place there in Laiwu. Actually the weather is cold now there, so it’s recommended to visit to Shandong province in spring or summer. But winter has its own, unique beauty as well.

Hey @Hasmik ,

I loved reading your story about your journey to the Yalushan temple complex! The way you plan your trips and perceive the idea of travelling just makes me think about life and how important it is to follow the steps that you mentioned. One of my dreams that I would like to do is to go for a backpack trip in China without planning all of it - just taking trains and ending in different cities, mountains and places. I used to live there for 3 years and enjoyed every single time I went travelling somewhere.

I have a question about Yalushan. Is it far away from the Taishan, one of the Five Sacred Mountains in China? I have been to three of these sacred mountains. Did you ever have the chance to visit any of them?

I would like to share a photo of the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. It describes very well the idea you expressed that many of the tourist spots are full of people and it is almost impossible to be there alone.

There is one last question I would like to ask you if you don’t mind, hehe. Do you speak Chinese or if not how was your travel experience in China? : )

@TsekoV Thank you for the supprotive and encouraging comment. Yalushan is not really near to Taishan just because there are no direct buses. But you can take a bus to Laiwu and then it is easy to go to Yalushan. I used to live in China for 2 years only and yes, I have climbed Taishan 3 times once to have a foggy view, which is very unique as the locals say and it turned out they were correct, second time during the summer just to enjoy the nice weather and nature and the third time I climbed at night to watch the sunrise. I liked the photo of the Temple of Heaven you shared, thank you. It was actually even more crowded by the time I visited. Unfortunetly I do not know Chinese and translator apps would help me everywhere I went.

Thank you for sharing, @Hasmik ! I will remember the Yalushan temple and hopefully if I have the chance to visit China again will go and explore it.

You have been three times to Taishan! This is so great! I know it is famous for the stunning sunrise one can observe there and people usually climb it during the night so they can reach the top by dawn. As for the foggy views and the sea of clouds (云海)I always enjoy seeing them and they add to the feeling one gets when travelling to China. One of my favorite mountains in China is the Yellow mountain. Have you ever been there?

Where did you spend your 2 years in China?

@TsekoV Because of my busy schedule I missed some so called “must see” places in China, but I am also hoping planning at the same time to come back and visit my friends and explore more places. I was living in Jinan city, not far from Taian city. It is the capital city of Shandong province. And may I ask where have you been living in China?

Hi @Hasmik ,

this temple complex is really nice and indeed very peaceful, and I like your story, sometimes those places are less known but not less nice because of that.

Thank you very much for sharing this experience and also the beautiful photos.

@LuigiZ Thank you for the comment. You got the point actually. Many places are not famous because of different reasons. But we, local guides are here to explore them and to share our experience with everyone.

Very well said @Hasmik, we are local guides and I do love this sentence :-).

@TsekoV, very nice picture of the Temple of Heaven, I have a very similar one, the beautiful temple but unfortunately like you say impossible to take it without people being a very famous touristic spot.

I am sure you had an amazing experience living in China for 2 whole years, @Hasmik . I believe there is never a last time visiting there. If you have been there once, you end up going again.

I lived 3 years in Beijing, one year for the language and two years for my Master’s degree.

Thank you very much @TsekoV , I’ve been there few years ago and I really loved the city, besides the Temple which is amazing. I’ve visited also the Great Wall of China and I have been impressed about it.

I fully agree with you that it is a very relaxing and peaceful area, quite wide as well. Do you live there? I understood from your words you use to walk often in the area.

Oh very nice @TsekoV , it should have been an amazing experience living there.

The place left me more impressed is definitely The Great Wall, a local person brought me there and guided into a short visit of it with explanation of this great constructions and my reaction was simply: WOW, a very big human construction made in a such difficult natural environment.
