Embarking on a spiritual pilgrimage can be a life-altering experience, and our Vaishnodevi Yatra in October 2022 was nothing short of magical. Join me as I recount our extraordinary journey filled with devotion, memorable moments and points to ponder.
Our spiritual journey began on a Tuesday night in Delhi, as our group of 13, including children, boarded the Vaishnodevi Special Train at 8 PM. The train was brimming with devotees, all united by their shared purpose – to seek the blessings of Mata Vaishnodevi. Laughter and excitement filled the air, turning our train ride into a joyous adventure.
As our journey led us further north, we couldn’t help but notice the subtle transformation in the climate. The air grew cooler, and a gentle breeze carried with it a sense of anticipation. It was as if nature itself was whispering to us, hinting at the sacred destination that awaited our arrival in Jammu. Finally, at around 10:30 AM, we reached Katra, our final stop.
A Pleasant Surprise at Trikuta Bhawan
Prior to our pilgrimage, we had wisely pre-booked a dormitory at Trikuta Bhawan(a government owned place) for half group, as the online booking portal indicated limited availability. However, upon our arrival, we were pleasantly surprised. The reception staff efficiently allocated a spacious 10-bed dormitory. The dormitory room, although not flawless, was certainly tolerable in terms of cleanliness. Moreover, each floor offered access to common washrooms, ensuring our basic needs were met comfortably. This hassle-free accommodation arrangement eased our minds and allowed us to focus on the spiritual journey that lay ahead.
The Marvel of Modern Pilgrimage
With our helicopter booking scheduled for 3 PM on the same day, there was no time to spare. After a refreshing bath, we swiftly got ready for the next leg of our pilgrimage. However, it’s worth noting that our booking was only for half of the group due to some last-minute confirmations.
As we prepared for the journey ahead, the group split into two. One half, armed with coveted helicopter tickets, made their way to Sanjhi Chhat, the helicopter departure point. The other half opted for the traditional pilgrimage route, heading to the main pedestrian path and choosing to travel by trekking. This division allowed each group to embark on their unique journey, bound by the same sense of devotion and excitement.
Sanjhi Chhat: Gateway to the Helicopter Adventure
Our journey reached an exciting juncture as we arrived at Sanjhi Chhat, the designated helicopter departure point. It felt like the modern pilgrimage was truly underway. Here, we delved into the contemporary aspects of this spiritual voyage.
Our first order of business was obtaining the essential RFID cards, a mandatory requirement for all visitors. These cards were our key to a seamless and secure pilgrimage experience.
Following the card issuance, we underwent ticket verification and weight checks, ensuring our safety during the helicopter ride. The entire process was efficiently managed, a testament to the meticulous planning that goes into the Vaishnodevi Yatra. A complimentary taxi service was provided, effortlessly ferrying us to the helicopter departure point. As we waited for our turn, a sense of anticipation hung in the air, a mixture of excitement and devotion.
After clearing the security check-in and a brief 20-minute wait, our moment finally arrived. We were directed to the helipad, where our cell phones and bags were temporarily surrendered. A few essential rules were explained, including seating arrangements, as we eagerly boarded the helicopter.
I was fortunate enough to secure a front seat beside the pilot, granting me a complete panoramic view of Katra and the mesmerizing mountains. Although the ride lasted less than 10 minutes, it was a priceless experience, especially as it was my first time in a helicopter.
Resuming the Journey on Foot
Upon reaching our destination, our belongings were returned, and we resumed our spiritual journey on foot. This leg involved a trek of approximately 3 Kilometers to reach the main Bhawan. The speakers played soothing bhajans, creating a serene atmosphere. The well-maintained roads and changing weather, albeit cold, were bearable. We made occasional stops for photography, with our RFID cards and bags periodically checked, emphasizing the importance of carrying the RFID card throughout our journey.
The Majestic Arrival at Bhawan
Around 6 PM, we arrived at the Bhawan, greeted by an imposing line of devotees eagerly awaiting their darshan. The air resonated with chants of ‘JAI MAA DI,’ creating a truly divine ambiance. Our hearts swelled with devotion.
Nourishing the Soul and Body
Upon our arrival, we decided to grab a quick meal while waiting for the rest of our group who were trekking. We treated ourselves to a satisfying feast and a steaming cup of coffee. The area offered numerous options, including food stalls, hotels, and canteens. Notably, Manokamna Bhawan , a government-organized canteen serving vegetarian fare at very affordable rates. As half of our group savored their meals, the remaining members took the opportunity to inquire at the dormitories about accommodations. This became necessary because our return tickets were for the following morning. Fortunately, we managed to secure a 6-bed dormitory. After the quick shift, we utilized common washrooms, which, while not pristine, were manageable.
We took a brief rest, knowing that our fellow travellers would soon join us, some of whom would be arriving by trekking. This moment of respite allowed us to recharge and prepare for the next leg of our spiritual journey.
Following our brief respite, It was a cold night, and the clock neared 11 PM as we embarked on this extraordinary journey.
A Mesmerizing Midnight Darshan
Venturing for darshan at 11:00 PM, the biting cold night couldn’t discourage our spirits. We eagerly proceeded to Gate No. 5 for a VIP darshan(a privilege bestowed upon those with return helicopter tickets for the same day). Bundled up in warm woollens, we proceeded with unwavering devotion. Entering the darshan lane, we successfully cleared two security checks, a witness to the meticulous arrangements in place.
In the Presence of ‘MATA RANI’
In just 20 minutes, we found ourselves standing in front of ‘MATA RANI.’ The experience was beyond words – the cold, the physical discomfort, all dissolved in that divine moment. The aura was enchanting, and our hearts swelled with a profound sense of fulfillment and spiritual bliss. The memory of that darshan remains etched in our souls, a radiant reminder of the transformative power of faith and devotion. We were grateful!
A Chilly Night in Vaishnodevi
After our darshan, we decided to try our luck for return helicopter tickets for the remaining members offline, and luckily, we succeeded. As we waited, we indulged in a hot cup of coffee from a nearby kiosk. The cold breeze sweeping down from the mountains was energising, a refreshing contrast to the divine energy that filled this sacred place.
We considered ourselves incredibly fortunate to secure a dormitory for the night, as we had witnessed some fellow pilgrims sleeping on the pavements due to the lack of accommodations. The temperature had fallen, and the cold was challenging.
With the blessings of this divine atmosphere, we returned to our room at Manokamna Bhawan, where we took a brief nap. Our plan for the morning was to visit the Bhairav Nath Mandir via the ropeway and then make our way to Sanjhichatt, as we had tickets for departure at 9 AM. This short rest prepared us for the adventures that awaited us in the upcoming day.
A Magical Misty Morning
The next morning began at 5 AM, but we soon learned that the ropeway only began operating at 7:30 AM. Thus, we decided to forgo Bhairav Nath Mandir and proceed directly to Sanjhi Chhat. Kids chose palkis for the journey, while others embraced the trek.
As we started our trek back, the soothing morning prayers filled the air, making the moment even more special. Along the way, we stopped at a Nestle coffee spot to enjoy a warm cup and capture videos and pictures of this enchanting place. It felt like sipping the very essence of the morning itself. This mix of mist, prayers, and coffee made our morning unforgettable, warming our hearts with its charm.
Farewell to Vaishnodevi: Helicopter Ride Back
Upon reaching Sanjhi Chhat, we enjoyed breakfast, had our tickets verified, and patiently awaited our turn. The helicopter ride back was equally exciting, even though some passengers had to settle for less scenic views from the back seats.
Collecting Memories and Souvenirs
Our return to the main shopping area of Katra marked the end of our spiritual sojourn. We collected prasad and local dry fruits for our families, retrieved our belongings from Trikuta Bhawan, and embarked on our journey back to Jammu. We had arranged for a local traveller’s vehicle, paying approximately 2000 INR for the ride.
