An intriguing observation of different limits on Connect activities.

Caption: A photo of watermelons and oranges for sale in the back of a truck on a street in Brazil.(Getty Images)While creating or replying to a post we stumble upon different boundaries.
Below is a summary of all those.
Please bear in mind, the figures quoted are based on my perception in some of the cases.

1. Abundantly known:

1.1 Photo file size restriction to 3 MB. Most of the novices get stumped upon this at least once.

2. Realized sometimes.

2.1 The number of characters per post should be restricted to 20000. Has anybody faced that hurdle?
2.2 Number of tags per post.
I was surprised to notice that one can’t add more than 10 tags in a post. However, some users can evade that. How?
2.3 Number of likes per hour are restricted to five-hundred numbers & there are some enthusiasts who have tested that limit.
2.4 Session time-out after thirty minutes of idling & then the website will return “Authentication ticket mismatch.”
2.5 Number of photos in the library. It is well known that we can’t add more than 1,000 photos to our library in our collection.
2.6 This one I forgot**. You can edit a reply or post in consecutive succession twice. Do that third time & then that will attract the spam filters immediately. Your contribution will vanish unless you request a moderator to recover that.**

3. Rarely encountered:

3.1 The number of private messages one can send in an hour.
On any occasion, I failed to transmit a third private message within a brief span.

Have I missed something in the above list?

4. What is required?

4.1 A number of posts by a singular person in a day, in any board.

Every so often, I come across an enormous number of posts by some enthusiast, one after the other.
On those occasions, I feel pity for those who try to contribute between and then quickly fall in oblivion.

Good series of observation @C_T

The idea of Connect, as we can read on several tips on the Help Desk, is to have a platform for creating “contents”.

This means that we have a very interesting set of “editing tools”, to create articles, that give us the possibility of very interesting edits.

Let me drop some observationbased on my personal experience and feeling

  • Character limit. It is related to readability: While sometimes it can be useful to have a long article, most of the time the people will stop to read without reaching the end of the article. The best solution for me is to balance between photos and text, using a few well selected photos
  • Number of tags. Overtagging in Connect is deeply discouraged. 10 tags for every post/reply is in my opinion even too much, ad it is used most of the times to get likes, tagging people only to see the post. I normally tag people only if directly related to the conversation. You can find post with a long series of replies with tag only, to skip the limitation
  • Number of likes. Time by time some user reach the limit. Personally I find it quite sad (Keeping Connect a clean place ), because I always write a post, like you, with the hope that the post is read, while someone is giving likes from the preview, without opening your post. I have already received long series of likes (up to 500 in one hours) by people that never opened a post wrote by me.
  • Number of photos. This is an unfortunate limit, due to the platform where Connect is hosted. BTW, for me it would be more interesting to have a better integration with Google products (Maps and Photos) for being able to easily embed our contents without using any storage in Connect
  • Private messages. As a Moderator, I do not usually respond to private messages that are not really personal messages, inviting the people to write publicly. But I have seen this issue reported by a few users
  • Number of post in a day. A better education is indeed needed, and I try every day to do this, but sometime is difficult to explain to the people that Connect is not a place to just drop a photo, without any other content. Personally I spend days to write a (hopefully good) post, so I second your frustration

Thanks for sharing your observations

Each Local Guide can contribute 1,000 photos @C_T

People cannot tag more than 10 people, lots of people pretend to by pasting them in as hyperlinks to the profile and they go to a lot of effort to make it look like they can tag more than 10 but they can’t really :).

Thanks for the clarification @ErmesT

Frankly, I am not worried about these different limits.

The only problem is that these arise all of a sudden and thus to take out that mystery I compiled the list. Nevertheless, these are helping to keep Connect tidy and decent.

Hi @C_T

I don’t know if you wanted some discussion prior to posting some solutions in Idea Exchange. If so here are some input referring you the items you listed:

2.3 Number of likes per hour

If you ask me I think a minimum of 60 or 120 seconds between each like would deter misuse.

2.4 Session time-out

There should be implemented a graceful timeout including a pop-up warning, and when timing out a draft should be saved, and finally, information about where to find the draft should be given.

2.5 Number of photos in the library.

I really like @ErmesT s proposal of better integration with Google Photos.

3.1 The number of private messages one can send in an hour.

I think you missed the limit of messages send per X seconds. It is very annoying and I have described the issue here.

A filter checking if people add a minimum of text to opening posts could be helpful also. It could come with an error message giving some pointers to what could be described in text.

Cheers

Hi @C_T Insightful post. Good to know the 30 minutes limit about the Authentication ticket mismatch.

I agree with @ErmesT about the photo limit. I think it could be better if we get integration with Google photos.

I was just trying to say what @PaulPavlinovich has mentioned. We can hyperlink to their profile link using @ with their username.

Thanks for the comment @MortenCopenhagen

However, I have stopped using the idea exchange as most of the suggestions time out.

I’ve had three go through to implementation @C_T - the geographic search for posts was one of mine :slightly_smiling_face:

Oops @MortenCopenhagen , @SaifIS , my bad

I have sometime a lack of memory :disappointed:

I supposed to have already submitted the idea, but probably this was just coming out, time by time, in some conversation, and remained in my list of “things to do”

Fixed now, for you to check and comment. Tool for embedding photos from other Google products

Strongly agree to the ideaof limiting number posts by a singular person in a day, @C_T .

Like @ErmesT , I usually take time and effort to write a post. Besides, it’s sometimes difficult to get through some enthusiasts’ post to read others.

That’s true @YuliiaZa

Some persons only add a photo & create a post without adding any further value to that. Thus one post per photo & then that resembles spam.
Further any queries on the photo go blank.

What a deep Observation!!! @C_T

Definitely agree with you…

I also feel some points you mention in your post…

1

Yes, I don’t understand when I newly join connect, then I find my photo size must be less than under 3MB.

Then, I reduce size… I think it limit for the reduce overload data on connect…

2.1

I feel 3 times when I publish my post

World :earth_asia: Of Badges!!!

It’s approx contain 16,000 characters…

After fourth time I get success to publish my post…

2.2

I believe in that reduce no of tagging, means 6-7 is enough. Because I saw many local guides to do over extra tagging… But here we tag 10 local guide in one post, it identical…

2.3

Sorry, I don’t do this…

To give 500 likes per hour!!!

Even nearly I give 50 -60 likes after reading content…

2.4

Yes, I feel, when I edit my post after than 45 min…

2.5

Agree with you… I think it needs to increase the limit of photos…

May be, 2000 is good one…

@ErmesT mention that manage the photos, is also a better solution to manage this …

2.6

When I post, that time I fully confident and sure…

Some of my posts went to spam… But after that I aware about this and now it works.

Sorry, I don’t send back to back private message till this date…

Yes, definitely agree with you…

I find some local guides Including me, post many times in a day…

But I post many times based on my content, knowledge and purpose…

But, I find some local guides to do many times in a day to achieving badges, like budding writter, zippy writter…

I really Like your observation…

And I understand your point of view also that you share your important points…

Here, C_T share his useful observation and not asking a question!!! @SaifIS

Thanks…
