Eva López weaves since she was 4 years old. She is recognized as one of Aymara’s finest weavers, and she is based in Calama. She does it manually or with a wooden spindle. There are different types of looms for different types and sizes of textiles. The materiality, the colors, the designs and the technique of the textiles elaborated by the Aymara ethnic group of northern Chile express the rich heritage of local pre-Hispanic cultures, the Tiwanaku empire and the subsequent settlement of the Spaniards. The wool comes from llamas and alpacas that inhabit the altiplano. The color remains natural if the garments are for everyday use, or incorporate color when they are to be worn in rituals and ceremonies. The geometric, anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figures are a reflection of the Andean worldview; and the use of different types of looms demonstrate the accumulation of influences from different periods. Eva breeds and shears her animals, spins the wool from the fleece and weaves her history of thousands of years with ancestral prolixity.
