An amazing theater

Over the years I’ve been to a few theaters but never to one like The Civic theater in Auckland, NZ. The Indian-inspired decorated foyer is just amazing! Here are just a few of the many photos I took of inside this theater.

Yes @AdamGT it is a beautiful theatre indeed, my favourite in Auckland. I have been to many movie screenings there and also live shows.

Did you know there is a theatre below the Civic? That is the Wintergarden Theatre. There is also a nightclub on the side of the Civic where the Hollywood star Russell Crowe used to be a DJ. His DJ name is Russ le Roq. Russell and I were good friends in my teenage years.

Thanks for your post, it brings back many memories.

@AdamGT Nice photos - it is one of a kind!

@TheEagleEye Good to know the anecdotes:) I went to the Civic Centre in 2012 to see Dame Julie Andrews. It was a great night - finally met my idol!

I do have a few outside shots of the Civic Centre, need some digging…

Wow @TheEagleEye you’ve shared details about the Civic I knew not. As you know from other posts, earlier in the year I was sailing around the South Island (Fiordland National Park, Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound and Dusky Sound) and our last stop before heading further north to the South Pacific, we stopped into Auckland. While there I was particularly interested in seeing the status of developments in the Wynyard-Quarter. As you’ll probably know the 36th America’s Cup is being held in Auckland and Auckland’s waterfront is quickly transforming to become the hub of this great world-sporting event in 2021. After this we strolled up Queen’s and ended up having coffee at Stark’s Cafe which is in the Civic building. I’d never been inside but thought to have a quick look. Well, that quick look took several hours as we were mesmerized by the internal decoration. I’d not seen anything like it before. It truly is a must visit for anyone that visits Auckland.

It was good that you utilised your time wisely @AdamGT . Sometimes the best things you see are found accidentally.

I have been at the Auckland Waterfront at previous America’s Cup events and also Whitbread Round The World yacht races. I’m a keen sailor so that sport interests me. I don’t know at this stage if I will go to Auckland for the next event.

HI @OliverKIWI

It’s a beautiful historical building but it’s the inside that mesmerizes you. Here is a photo I in late in late February took of the outside.

Although we found it very much disrupted at the moment because it is under significant development, Auckland is a beautiful city @TheEagleEye and you are absolutely right, sometimes the best things you see are found accidentally.

Yes sadly this pandemic has disrupted many of our activities @OliverKIWI . As well as disrupting my normal day-to-day life, I was away overseas through February and March and have many reviews from this trip to upload on Maps however as you will know this pandemic has disrupted the contribution process on Maps and because of this I now have a large queue of contributions pending approval so, for the moment, I have stopped adding reviews.

@AdamGT Bottom line - let’s keep safe:)

Yes @sparekh like you I never saw a theater anything like this before and it was just by chance. Nothing to look at really from the outside. As I wrote we had a coffee in a small cafe attached to the theater and unplanned just thought, to go in and see what shows and movies they had on etc but as soon as we walked in we were mesmerized so much so that instead of just a few minutes we ended up spending several hours there and I was clicking like a mad man. It was like a time capsule or some kind museum or Indian-temple with many different Buddhas so well presented and decorated with hundreds, and I really mean hundreds, of elephant statutes on the walls and ceilings, doors pillars, and even the large chandelier lights (see photos just added). Truly a must see and an amazing experience. As @TheEagleEye has said, “sometimes the best things you see are found accidentally”.

@AdamGT didn’t you go into the cinema? If you did, you would have seen the amazing ceiling. It looks like the night sky with 1000s of stars. It is indeed a beautiful theatre.

@TheEagleEye Yes, I can testify that:) I’d call it classic art deco style, but very exotic!

Hi @TheEagleEye

Unfortunately we didn’t get into the theater below the Civic, however, next time we definitely will.
