I have a problem. When I take a photo and add it to ‘my contributions - add photo’ I then type in the place name, but it does not exist. However if I come out of that screen and enter the place name in Maps, home page ’ search’ the place is there. Am I doing something wrong or is there a problem?
Oi, @Kieron213
Sucesso

Hi @Kieron213
There are several ways to add photos or videos in Google Maps, all explained in Add, remove, or share photos or videos in Google Maps
To make your search easier you can make sure to have back up & sync and Location History turned on, this will help with your search
Hi @ErmesT
Thanks for your reply. I am aware how to use maps for photos etc. Your reply does not cover the issue at all, but thank you anyway.
Hi@gmapas
I understand where you are coming from but that is not the issue. It shows places further away than the one I was looking for and visited. It also showed places near by, IE. The same distance, so I don’t think that is the issue, but thank you for your kind help
Is it happening for every location, or just for some of them, @Kieron213
Normally I do not follow that procedure, I prefer to find the place first, and then to tap on the “add a photo” button.
The only thing that come in my mind is that the place do not have a listing in Maps, but as you said that you can find it, can you kindly share a link of a place where do you are having that issue?
Hi again @ErmesT
If I tell you what I did, then you can follow my steps, though you won’t have my photo .
I don’t allow Maps access to my photo gallery unless I authorise it, but that’s not the issue.
I clicked on ’ add photo’ on my contributions page.
My gallery appeared. I clicked on the photo I wanted to add.
Google then gave suggestions of places ( it never gets them right). None were correct or even close. I typed in Grinshill Hill. It could not find it …IE. it gave places with Grinshill in the title or near by, but not Grinshill Hill.
I came out and discarded the draft.
I then went to maps home page. I typed in Grinshill Hill in the search box. There it was!
I’ve had this problem several times over the past few months, but with different places.
It’s nothing to do with locality. Ie. Local search’ s or places visited, as it shows places of equal distance, or more, but not the place I took the photo of/ typed in the search box.
Screenshot 1 shows my search on maps home page. It finds it. Screenshot 2 shows the search while allocating the photo of ’ Grinshill Hill’ It does not find it.
thanks for your help
Hi @ErmesT
Ps…
It does not matter whether I type Grinshill or Grinshill Hill. It still does not find it when allocating the photo
…see another screenshot
Thanks for the reply @Kieron213
Do you mean that you want to add a photo here?
Ok, thanks for confirming, @Kieron213
The reason why you can’t find that place for adding photos is very simple. You are trying to add a photo in a village, and this is not permitted.
According to the Help page that I shared with you already “You can’t add photos or videos to addresses or coordinates.”
This includes road, cities and everything else that in not a listing in Google Maps.
The photos that you see in there are sourced directly by the AI from photos posted on listings in the area.
There is a way (a bug) to bypass the limitations, but as it is against the rules I will not share it with you
hi @ErmesT
Grinshill Hill is neither an address or a coordinate. I understand photos can not be added to addresses etc, but this is a Park. A country park.
Thanks for your help, anyway.
Ok, @Kieron213 , let me move on desktop.
The link that I shared with you is directing us here:
where you can read: “Grinshill is a small village, and civil parish in Shropshire, England, United Kingdom.”
So that’s one could not be the place we are talking about.
Near there we can find Corbet Wood Countryside Heritage Site and Corbet wood car park - for grinshill rocks (weird name). The first one is categorized as a Nature Preserve and the second one as a Country Park. in both of them it is possible to add photos
I wrote a post called
Stuff we can not edit on Google Maps
When Ermes mentioned addresses and cities, this also includes geographic features. In the post I tried to make clear the distinction. The easiest way to check is to look for the upload photo link/button.
Some places with no add photos options can be wrongly marked as not accepting photos. But as photos are already shown under the pin this is not very likely the case here.
Cheers
Morten
Hi @ErmesT
Yes, I had a look. It’s not correct. I’ll try and send an edit through, but as I have no proof they probably won’t change it, but many thanks for your help.
It was only 1 photo. Not worth the hassle really but it’s been good chatting to you
Yes, I was aware of the address and coordinate rule, but not the geographical features.
In this case the listing is wrong, but I don’t think I can change it as I don’t have proof that Grinshill Hill is part of the Country Park, the main part actually.
However now ErmesT and your good self, have explained in more detail the strange rules regarding addresses and locations, I’ll know what to expect, and won’t bother adding photos for those locations.
Many thanks .
It is always a pleasure, @Kieron213 , to help you to understand some rules. It doesn’t matter if it is about one or one hundred photos, maybe tomorrow, or next year, you will share this and help others with the same issue.
And in addition you gave me the opportunity to explore an area that I never explored before, and to try to fix some missing trails
