Akwaaba: The Ghanaian way of saying welcome

One of the very first words you will hear or come across on as you enter the country amidst the warm reception is the word ‘Akwaaba’.

It is a word from the Twi language, the most widely spoken local dialect in the country.

At the Kotoka International Airport - the largest international Airport in the country - one is ushered by the boldly written words.

Akwaaba literally means welcome back - denoting a return from a journey. Anytime you are in Ghana, make sure you respond to an Akwaaba welcome with ‘Medaase’ meaning thank you
