AI-Powered Photo Captions now on Google Maps 📸✨

Today, while posting a review on Google Maps, I noticed an exciting new feature that automatically generates captions for uploaded photos! :tada:

A pop-up appeared saying:

:camera: “Captions help others find and understand your photos. Captions will be added automatically to get you started. Edit them to give more context.”

As a Local Guide, I found this feature quite interesting because captions can make photos much more informative and useful for fellow Maps users. :globe_showing_europe_africa::light_bulb:

:glowing_star: Why this is useful

:white_check_mark: Saves time when uploading multiple photos :camera_with_flash::camera_with_flash::camera_with_flash:
:white_check_mark: Provides instant context for images :memo:
:white_check_mark: Helps people better understand what they’re viewing :eyes:
:white_check_mark: Can improve photo discoverability on Google Maps :magnifying_glass_tilted_left:
:white_check_mark: Especially useful for restaurants :pizza::hamburger:, cafés :hot_beverage:, tourist attractions :classical_building:, parks :deciduous_tree:, and local businesses :convenience_store:

:thinking: My Thoughts

While AI-generated captions are a great starting point :rocket:, I still believe Local Guides should review and edit them whenever needed. After all, nobody knows the story behind a photo better than the person who took it! :blush:

A photo may show:
:pizza: A signature dish
:artist_palette: Unique interior decor
:wheelchair_symbol: Accessibility features
:house_with_garden: Cozy seating areas
:door: Storefronts and entrances

Adding personal context can make contributions even more valuable for the community. :heart:

:bar_chart: What I Noticed

In my case, Google Maps automatically generated captions for multiple photos before posting the review. This could be a significant enhancement for contributors who regularly upload large numbers of photos. :chart_increasing::camera:

:rocket: AI-Generated Captions in Real Reviews

I also tested this feature while posting reviews, and Google Maps automatically generated captions for the uploaded photos.

:round_pushpin: Review #2: Jaishri Ambica Dalwada House

:camera_with_flash: Take a look at the photo captions and let me know how accurate you think they are!

:crystal_ball: Looking Ahead

This feature could become a great productivity tool for Local Guides who frequently upload photos and contribute reviews. I’m excited to see how the accuracy improves over time and how it helps users discover places through richer visual content. :sparkles:

:red_question_mark: Have you received this feature yet?

:speech_balloon: If yes:
:small_blue_diamond: How accurate were the generated captions?
:small_blue_diamond: Did you edit them before posting?
:small_blue_diamond: Do you think AI-generated captions will improve the quality of contributions on Google Maps?

The combination of AI assistance and human experience can make Google Maps even more helpful for everyone. :heart:

Looking forward to hearing your experiences! :raising_hands::globe_showing_americas:

@KetanChhaniyara
Nice post

I haven’t seen this feature yet @KetanChhaniyara. Are you suggesting this only works for reviews? Most of the photos I post are NOT part of a review.

That’s a great news @KetanChhaniyara I haven’t yet tried. Will check, see and exploreif available. Thanks for sharing the information. Seems interesting.

It took me by surprise when I first experienced the AI powered captions, bit while exploring more, it felt like a good addition. Thanks for sharing info @KetanChhaniyara

@KetanChhaniyara

Yes @tony_b, currently I seen it’s working only for reviews.

As always, your post was very helpful and informative. @KetanChhaniyara bhai. Thanks for keeping us updated with the latest Google Maps features. Looking forward to trying the new AI-powered photo captions! :clap::blush:

Pudgy Penguin Says Thank You with a Hat Tip

Hello @KetanChhaniyara,

Please keep in mind the Local Guides/Google Maps logo is a Google brand identity and is reserved for official use only. Do not use the Local Guides/Google Maps logo, pin, or any other Google imagery in any of your online or offline materials without expressed written permission. Please refer to Local Guides community policy for more information.

The new community logo & assets are yours to use for things like meetups, custom swag, and forum headers.

Please remove or edit the Google Maps logo, the old Connect logo and the Google Maps label or your topic will be removed from the forum.

Excellent, dear friend @KetanChhaniyara
AI generated Captions are really a great way… Hope it will become more effective in the future.

Thanks for sharing these…

Hi @MoniDi,

Thank you for the reminder and for pointing this out.

I appreciate your guidance regarding the use of Google brand assets. I was not aware that the Google Maps logo, map pin, Connect logo, and related imagery could not be used in custom graphics without explicit permission.

I have already updated the cover image and removed the Google Maps logo, old Connect logo, map pins, and other Google-branded elements to ensure compliance with the Local Guides community policy.

Thank you for helping keep the community aligned with the branding guidelines and for sharing the information about the new community assets.

@KetanChhaniyara I don’t have this feature yet. :pensive_face:

I think it would be useful and helpful but I would definitely hope that users will check the captions and correct them, if necessary. Also, I’m not sure if every photo needs to be captioned and I would rather see a careful/minimal use of AI (AI consumes a lot of power and resources). On the flip side, having captions for all photos would be useful especially for those with visual difficulties and screen readers are needed.

Cute Rabbit Thank You Sticker

Thanks @Ptrivedi @Darshraj for your kind words! :slight_smile:

Hi @tony_b , Yes as far as I checked and tried, it’s working only for photos posted along with reviews.

It could be a phased rollout, and I’ll update the post if I notice it in other upload scenarios. Thanks for sharing your experience! :raising_hands:

Thank you GKP ji ! :blush:

Yes, I found it quite interesting too.

Looking forward to hearing about your experience and how accurate the captions are when you get a chance to try it.

Hi @Hemang_Rindani ,

I had a very similar experience. At first, I was surprised to see captions being generated automatically, but after exploring the feature a bit more, it felt like a useful addition to Google Maps.

While the captions may still need a quick review and edit in some cases, they can definitely save time and help provide context to photos. In my case, generated captions were quite accurate. Looking forward to seeing how this feature evolves and improves over time.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Thank you @NareshDarji

I agree, this feature has the potential to make photo contributions more efficient and informative. AI-generated captions provide a helpful starting point, especially when uploading multiple photos, while still allowing Local Guides to add their personal touch and context.

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts! :glowing_star:
