African Pear: Palatable & Pleasant

Picture of African Pear: Fruit, Cooked fruit, Leaves, Seed & Pulp

In Africa, pears come in different types, African Elemi, Avocado pear, African pear etc. existing in diverse colours, Purple, Navy, Green etc. taking different shapes oval, bell, round etc.

Today I present to you this ellipsoid drupe called African pear, grown mainly in Africa: especially Nigeria, Angola, Congo Sierra Leone and in some Asian nations like Malaysia. Known as Ube in Southeast Nigeria, relatively unknown in the Western and Northern parts of Nigeria. Called Atanga in Gabon, Plum in Cameroun, Safou in Congo. Dacryodes edulis is the botanical name. Other names given to this fruit includes Butter fruit, Bush butter, oil fruit etc. The fruit is mainly harvested during rainy seasons the same time fresh corns are harvested from farms. One irony surrounding African pear is that whereas most fruits turn lighter in colour to indicate ripeness or maturity for example, orange, pawpaw etc. African pear changes from white or pink to navy, purple or lavender to indicate readiness for consumption.

The oil content makes it a compliment to other foods, think of bread and butter then you can get the picture of Maize or Corn and African Pear. Whereas corn on the cob and pear is raw. Bread and butter are refined and processed Corn and butter. Oftentimes it is washed and soaked in warm water and the pulp licked like an iced cream it is equally eaten with roasted plantain. But whichever option you choose, this fruit is a delight anytime any day and has been proven to be a reservoir of minerals like calcium, potassium, and magnesium in addition to the presence of vitamins A and C and other nutrients. Also, apart from the butter extract bush pear is used to heal wounds and used as moisturizer in certain quarters.

Hi @ogewuru … thanks for sharing this and looking at your photos, I though at first it was eggplants. Eggplants, or terong in bahasa Indonesia, is pretty much similar to this African pear. We usually cook it in soup (we call it sayur lodeh, with coconut milk and other veggies like sweet corn, carrots, and green beans), grill or fried it and eat it with sambal or the chilli sauce. I guess @PaDeSSo @Nyainurjanah @Velvel are familiar with this as well

When you say Ube, what I have in mind is the purple yam. We usually steam it or even make puree out of it and cook it in different form like cakes.

Well this might be different and again, thanks for sharing it with us here in Connect.

It looks so different from the pears in SouthAmerica. I also found so interesting that you boil the pear. From the photos I can see the African Pears are more larger and skinnier than the pears you can see in Peru.

@Lukas_1 really, but are the plums butter filled like African Pear ?

The kind of plums I know @ogewuru usually look like this:

Definitely not butter filled, but i’d say they’re juicier.

@ogewuru In our country, in various tourist spots and street, they sell burnt corns, I tried them once though I didn’t like them much.
