African Meet-up in Lagos

On this day 7th December 2019, we had an unscheduled African Meet-up in the commercial city of Nigeria.

Yesterday, we learned that a Kenyan Local Guide was in Nigeria for a brief working visit. @SanyaOdare and I deliberated on how to meet with @RobAo before his departure the next day. We had to adjust all our activities to ensure we connected with Rob once more and also get other Local Guides in Lagos to give him some taste of Nigeria solidarity. Other LGs we contacted showed interest in meeting him. Six of us trooped out from various parts of Lagos to the Island

I rounded off my Accessibility Meetup at about 2pm WAT then went home to freshen up and sort other things. Our plan was to meet by 6pm on the Island.

Six of us trooped out from various parts of Lagos to the Island! @ChidiAmadi and I met Rob at the famous Nike Art Gallery where we hugged tightly and later hailed a taxi to Admiralty Way. We joined @Sagir and Sanya at Kobis. While we awaited other LGs, Sanya put a call to Karen. It was a fantastic moment as we laughed and talked about everything Local Guides. Sorry Karen for waking you up.

@Mayford @HelloSamsonR and Joshua would later arrive as we procceded to Lekki Phase 1.

So instead of hanging out at a pub or restaurant, we joined my niece’s birthday which I almost missed. It was such a great moment as we had yam porridge and sauced beef. Something special for Rob to taste. Of course, we took photos like typical Local Guides as the sound of music blasted from the corners.

Rob engaged all the Local Guides to understand their journey and how it has changed our lives. Although, the question came unexpectedly, we are shared our stories with him individualally. I guess Rob has stories to tell.

Finally, we took photos with our specisl guest, as we prepared to leave. Each of us had moment’s to hug Rob as we dispersed to various parts of Lagos as the weekend traffic grew!

It’s been a dream to have an African Meet-up for a while but fortune smiled on us and see how an unofficial African Meet-up just happened.

Thanks to everyone who spared time to hangout with our Kenyan brother in Lagos. Yes and he loved Nigeria Jollof rice.

See some more funny photos in the album.

Wakanda forever? :grinning:

@SanyaOdare @RobAo , it was perfectly fine to wake me up since Kelvin and I (and a few Connect Live 2019 attendees) woke Rob up at 3 am in Nairobi.

True friends pick up, right?

Cheers,

Karen

Hi @EmekaUlor ,

Thanks for the nice recap of the meet-up in Lagos!

As I can see, you had a fantastic time there and I had a look at the photos, they are really very funny. :slightly_smiling_face:

I wanted to let you know that I am going to relabel your post to the meet-ups section where the Local Guides who are interested in meet-ups, will see it.

Have a nice day!

Thank you @EmekaUlor and @SanyaOdare for organising the meetup and @KarenVChin for waking up - yes, true friends pick up at the randomest of times when called upon. This was quite a surprise considering I had one day left in Lagos. I enjoyed hearing all the Local Guides experience stories, the jolof rice (Sorry Ghana, Nigeria has the best Jolof) and meeting everyone who turned up.

When in Kenya, mi casa, e su casa.
