This is probably a very dumb question but are some guides adding an @ sign to their names to create a sort of hyper link to their Google guide profile page?

We use @ + ConnectID to mention someone in acomment or a post this way that person receives a notification, and they can read your comment , just as I did at the beginning of this comment
You can mention up to 10 people in a post, also if you click that name it will direct you to their profile

Tagging people is the best way to do that because, as already indicated by @LaloPadilla
The tag have a double function:
- Notify the tagged person about the mention
- Linking the connect profile, where your Google maps profile is shared
However, abusing of unnecessary tag can be quite annoying. Please read To Tag or Not to Tag? Best practices and rules about tagging people in Connect to know how to better use the tags
